That’s sad. I enjoyed watching him race as a youngster. That is when it was on TV.
I remember a near fatal crash that he came back from and continued a spectacular career
    RIP

When I was at school, I had a large poster of Lauda at the wheel of his Ferrari adorning one wall of my tiny apartment. He was a remarkable competitor.
    A life well-lived, sir.

    A true legend and all-around bad-ass.

Could have just inherited a successful business from his father but - he wanted to go fast.

    RIP

Yep... total badass. I remember when F1 was exciting as a kid.

    Must watch Rush again soon.

He was a master competitor from when skill mattered far more than the car does now. A great loss.

When I was in jr high and high school ('77-'85) my dad got Road&Track magazine and I actually read the "track" section. Lauda was my favorite. RIP.

NPR gave Jackie Stewart probably 10 minutes to talk about him and share his memories. He was very eloquent...it made an odious drop-off at Philly airport worth the trip.

I had assumed he was indestructible.

Guess that wreck killed him after all, it just took 40 something years to do it.

I knew about him but the Rush movie made me truly appreciate both he and James Hunt and their rivalry and friendship. That final race for the championship where Mario won. How amazing was that?

Anyway, sad to hear. RIP Nikki

I saw that announcement this morning on-line. Not unexpected, given what he was going thorugh recently, but sad none the less.
