A friend sent me the link to this short documentary about The Band.

Some nice interviews and history about some musicians that I love.

I have it on DVD ... Highly recommendable! And why wouldn't it be - it is after all about the making of one of rock's greatest albums.

A little bit of trivia for fans of The Band, Robbie and Telecasters: On the original recording Robbie used his black Tele through an old Gibson amp for "King Harvest" - not the Epiphone Riviera that he uses in the documentary (which was filmed some time after the actual recording took place).

Here's the original recording ... Rather different guitar tone.

Gotta love Levon Helm's enthusiasm at the board. The music world lost a good one last week.

The two versions of this song is a great argument against the statement that "tone is all in the fingers". Obviously style is in the fingers, but the very dry tone of Robbie's Tele through the old Gibson amp is quite different from the woody tone of his Epiphone. Both definitely sounds like Robbie though.

I wonder why he didn't use the Tele on the documentary footage ... ? Nothing wrong with the Epi though. ;)

Because he was a notorious gear ho from way back.
