I was trying to sell my wife's old minivan for cheap - it has some problems and was just taking up room. One guy offered me this old guitar as a trade. I took him up on it.

    The guitar:

I haven't plugged it in to test the electronics, but its plays nice and sounds pretty good unplugged. Hardly any fret wear. I think I like it.

    ES120T. I don't know what the T is for, but it's there.

Knew someone that had one 40 years ago.
He's still pissed he sold it too.
We never really understood the potential of Thinlines those were "The Days Of Super/Ultra/Cobweb Slinkys". 10's were "what Bass Players used" when they doubled on Guitar.
I'd put a set of 11's on that and - Off To The Races - I'd love to hear some serious Choppin' with That Girl - She's very lovely - a Keeper.
A little green with envy i be!!! :D:cool::lol:

There are not many vans that I know of I wouldn't trade for that beauty.

The pickguard is kind of crazy. It's hard to tell from the head-on pictures, but it looks really thick near the pots and jack. It's actually a hollow molded plastic guard; the electronics are mounted directly to it, so they (Gibson) never had to drill holes for the controls or pickup or fish wires through the body to solder them up. It was a lot cheaper to produce that way.

I saw one modded with the pickguard removed. The pots and pickup were mounted in the traditional manner - through the body, like a 335. As goofy as that big ol' pickguard is, I guess I kind of don't mind it. At least for now.

Still need to restring it and plug it in... maybe tonight.

I think my wife would kill me if I traded her new van for this thing. The old one had just been sitting around for a few years.

It really is in great shape. I haven't looked it over too hard, but the only flaws I've seen are: a small (repairable) chip in the black paint on the headstock (near the nut), the handle is missing from the case, and the lid from the in-case storage box (the thing with the Gibson logo in the picture) is detached. I should have wiped it down before taking the pictures; some of those smudges make it look pretty dirty.

And, imsilly. Thanks for the explanation of the "T" in the model name - makes sense. Unlike a Tele Thinline, I believe this thing is a true hollow body. I'll have to check it out a little closer when I get a chance.

    That thing is kick ass!
Had a guy brought one to my house when he came to check out my Ampeg M-12 to see if he would buy it. He did cause the combination of that guitar and that Ampeg were just so sweet he couldn't refuse it.

Try that ES through an octal preamp type amp and see if you can keep the grin off your face.

    Congrats on the trade.

The post title reminds me of the scene from 'The Blues Brothers' where Dan Ackroyd says he traded the Cadillac for a microphone......
