    Hi All,

Well it is indeed a NGD for me today. I just picked up a guitar that I knew existed, but had not seen available anywhere for a long, long time, until now.

My new guitar is a 1998 MIM Fender Telecaster Tommy Emmanuel Signature.

In Australia, Tommy Emmanuel is a household name when it comes to guitar. Tommy worked closely with the people from Fender to create this great guitar! Visually, it looks pretty similar to a Fender deluxe tele from that same period ('98), but it has a distinctive transparent sapphire paint job on it, a really nice neck, pearloid pickguard and Tommy's signature on the front of the headstock.

There were only ever 160 of these guitars made, all of which were sent to and sold in Australia for our market only...they were all sold out within a month of going on sale...Tommy owns the very first one...and I feel lucky to have found and now own one myself.

Yes, it is a Mexican assembled Fender, but it is the nicest looking/feeling/performing one I have ever seen/played, so I am REAL HAPPY.

I will post some pics of it once I have a bit of a play of it at home and I might let you all know a bit more about when once I've played it in a bit - Its a 12 year old guitar, but it looks just about brand new...

For now, here are a couple of shots of the guitar from the store where I got it:

I'm stoked! New Guitar Day....Woo Hoo.

    Cheers All,

nice gat.. with my signature, I have to like it! I mean, it should by rights have had at least 12 changes of stings!

That's a really great looking guitar! I love the wood grain; very open and attractive.

If Tommy endorses it, then it must also play and sound every bit as good as it looks. Nice find!

Thanks everyone, yeah I love it!

The wood grain looks nicer in person than in the photos, the blue colour really pops in person and looks different depending on the amount of light in a photo as well. I will take some photos of it of my own soon and try and show you how it looks in more detail.

When Tommy worked on developing the guitar I read somewhere that he selected and set the pickups just the right way he wanted and the feel of the guitar (for him) was spot on as well. So I don't think I will be changing a thing on it!

    More updates to come...

    Thanks again all...gotta love NGD's :)

The body is really nice! Is that ash? Somebody definitly put some care into that one. Anybody know the fate of that sunburst tele Tommy had in the 90's? That was another cool guitar.

Does it make you play like Tommy Emmanuel? That would be cool.

That is really nice! I didn't even know he had done a Signature Tele. I'm wondering though, what's with the bullet end strings on a Tele?

Love that shade of blue! Congrats and happy NGD.
Just curious, but since it was such a limited run did Fender number the guitars?

I'm not usually a fan of blue guitars but that one is gorgeous. Tommy is a great player and I have no doubt that his signature model would be a great playing guitar. Where did you pick it up? I'm in Aus and have never seen one.

Thanks for all the replies and great comments everyone, I really appreciate your well wishes and interest.

I have tracked down some more info and tidbits about the guitar (with thanks to the members of the official Tommy Emmanuel forum for most of this info).

Here we go..here are the specs...Built in 1997/98:

    # Known as the 'Tommy Tele'

    # Body - Alder with Ash veneer

    # Neck - one piece Maple

    # Rosewood fingerboard

    # 21 medium jumbo frets

    # White pearl pickguard

    # Signature on headstock

    # 'TE' logo on identifying neck plate

    # 2 tex-mex Tele pickups (neck/bridge)

    # 1 tex-mex Strat pickup (middle)

    # 5 way Strat-o-tone select switch

    # Usa vintage 6 saddle Tele bridge

    # Vintage Kluson machine heads

    # Color - Saphire Blue transparent

So it has an Alder body with an ash veneer on front and back.

The serial numbers were not unique to this model but ranged within MN811xxxx thru MN812xxxx. So that is quite unusual (and unfortunate) but, there you go...

And here is a bit of what Tommy has said about the guitar himself...

"Tommy: I had my own Fender Telecaster Signature Model in Australia. They made 160 of them and they shipped them to Australia and they all sold in a month." Also, "Mate I think the current set up is perfect and what I wanted".

Sadly it doesn't make me play like Tommy Emmanuel, but hey, I can always dream of striving for it...just give me about the next 46 years to try ok :)

I had never seen one of these guitars in person ever, but was lucky enough to find it in Bendigo Victoria.

Again, I hope to post some pics of my own of the guitar this week...

    Thanks again all.

P.S. if anyone has ever seen or has a picture of the stupendously rare Fender USA Custom Shop Tommy Emmanuel edition guitar (25 made?) please post a pic as I would love to know what one looks like. Thanks.

    Cheers All.
