NGD- Tell me how badly I overpaid ('66 Tele)

Discussion in 'Vintage Tele Discussion Forum (pre-1974)' started by LeicaBoss, Sep 29, 2019.

What's top dollar (which I likely paid more than) for this '66 Tele?

Trying to arrive at some sort of highly accurate single number is not a worthwhile experience. I'd tend to think of it as a range. You'd have to do a whole lot of research for what else is available.

For example, here's something at Gruhn where the asking price is 8k. I don't claim any experience buying from Gruhn, but from what I've read, it would be a rare instance for someone to claim that they underpaid: ...a 1963 neck with "70's" other stuff, refin, relic'd, refret...

here's a '72 tele from CME; they're asking $2995, price drop from $3595...and they will look at offers...

Just a couple examples; sounds like you did just fine. FWIW, I think you've adopted a good way of thinking about it and so forth.

    Congrats! Looks muy wayno.

I think you got it at a good price. In my warped view of value I think about how much enjoyment I get vs. the price I paid. If you play that guitar every day for 10 years it will have you cost $1 per play. That seems pretty reasonable! That is not including resale value either.

Well as Lester Bangs said “the only way to make ur reputation as a rock journalist is to be honest... an unmerciful.”

I bought a Les Paul online and wasn’t worried about counterfeiting for similar reasons. Has that goofy “120th anniversary” banner as the 12th fret market and those etune automatic tuner thingies. Nobody would counterfeit that

It was in great shape and had what I wanted tho. Good price and plays wonderfully so win for me.

I think that's a reasonable price for that ax. I bought an unmolested '71 (unmolested meaning all original but it was bruised and battered) for around that price and I too had the jitters about spending that kind of cash. I am happy. It's a lot of cash but the guitar is my age. That means something to me, for some reason.

Cool, thanks for the second photo.

Yes, I think it somehow looks better to me 'right way up,' by which I mean either vertical or horizontal in the position it would be played in. Funny how the mind works.

Having said all that though, I think I like it as a white or cream colour. But, it's all individual taste and of course, no rights or wrongs.

I just roughly knocked this up in Phoptshnop (welcome distraction from the group portrait I'm working on*). Couldn't be bothered masking out the strings. Sampled the colour from the wall.

    * from a (photo) gig last weekend - mostly of two kids and parents, but some extended family group shots at a shrine - not a single group image were all eyes are open. I'm sitting here going nuts erasing people in the background and cloning subjects eyes between images. Argh...

I think you saved me $25 for a repro guard! Sticking with the tort. It's funky. I'm all in!
