Hi all! First post on this forum in a long time! Just scored this beautiful road worn Tele on Reverb. It already has some killer upgrades such as Lollar pickups and brass saddles, and I just ordered a distressed Bakelite guard from Callaham.

I’ve seen a couple of members here use shoe polishes/dyes to make the checking stand out, and I’ve also seen some nightmare finish problems that have resulted from this. Any advice for really accentuating the checking? Any other mod suggestions are welcome!

Haven't been able to put it down. The Lollar Special T in the bridge is out of this world!

I’ve only ever heard GREAT things about Lollars. Someday I’ll afford a set! I’m making due with my new GFS pickups for the time being.

    Congrats on a great guitar!

The sanded one piece maple neck with the tall, narrow frets is my favorite. I loved mine stock, and love it even more with compensated brass saddles, treble bleed, and Cavalier Fat Lion in the bridge. It's my go to Tele. I bet you will love it too! Wear that sucker out! :)

When I was trying to decide on my first proper (i.e.: non-cheapo) Telecaster, the Road Worn was about the most likely suspect from FMIC. I loved the neck. I can only imagine what it’s like with Lollars. Enjoy!

Roadworn with Lollars...That’s the exact Tele I want someday.

I have a Les Paul 50’s Standard with Lollars and a Nash P with Lollars. I like Lollars obviously

    I would let it alone.

I let my RW sit out on a stand most of the time. The bright spots on the neck will get darker over time. Just keep playing it.

The only thing I would do is turn around the control panel to where it is supposed to be.

    Congrats!

I picked up the same one a few months ago to replace an FSR that I had, and I love it!

I also considered the shoe polish method to bring out the checking, but after too many horror stories, decided to leave it as is.
Maybe with time, or enough grime it will happen naturally. Would hate for something to go wrong.

The only mod I did to mine was add compensated brass saddles, Twisted Tele pickup set, and an Obsidian Wire wiring panel (so I don't have to deal with soldering in other pickups).
I have a Lollar Special T (Bridge) lying around, so may have to give a shot at some point.

    Enjoy!

Congrats on your score! The Road Worn Teles are great guitars. I have one, too, and love it even with the stock pickups.

Yeah they're not cheap. I paid a little more than I usually would have for this guitar because of the pickups.

Definitely put that Lollar Special T in your Tele. That’s what’s in mine and it’s stellar. Unless you’re strictly a bakersfield twanger, It’ll take the guitar to another level.

    I tho
I thought about it but this position is handy for volume swells, faux steel guitar licks and tremolo effects.
