New unit (arrived the other week) on the right, new new unit (arrived today) on the left. Indonesia vs. Mexico in the Telecaster World Cup.

What made you decide to buy both of these in a short space of time? Which do you prefer?

I would assume the Mexican Fender is better.

I bought the Squier intending to rip out its internal organs and put in new pots and switch and all and give it a pair of ‘51 Nocaster pickups. I figured it had to be a butterscotch blonde, because Nocaster.

So far it has a shiny new 920D prewired control plate and a new bone nut, but I’ve left the pickups for now because I kinda like them. The neck is a little on the dark side, and it seems to pair nicely with one of my amps, a Frontman 25R with an Eminence 1058 speaker. The amp is in the kitchen on a hardwood floor, which gives it a slightly different flavor. A mellow aftertaste, with hints of oak and lacquer.

I have a couple other Squiers, but I’ve never had a proper Fender, so the other night after a couple of beers I figured what the hell. I like this one too! I love the neck on it. Its overall sound is brighter and spankier. It has a teeny bit of buzz in a couple of spots, but I’m guessing that will change when I take off the 9s and put on 10s.

Beautiful Teles. I like them both. Which plays better? Sounds better?

This is my project for the evening, to decide. I've had worse evenings.

Definitely the Mexican neck. I'm not sure how to describe the difference, and it's subtle, but it just feels easier and maybe a hair thinner. It might be the finish; it has the teensiest bit of gloss or satin or something to it, especially on the fretboard, and the Squier feels closer to very, very smooth plain old wood.

As for the sound, beats me. I need to a/b them in another amp downstairs and see if tubes make a difference in the difference between them.

    Both look great, Munchie.

I would replace the nut on that Indonesia Squier.

I've had 39 of these Cortek Surabaya Squiers, and replaced the nut on every one. I've have a little over half that number of MIM Fenders, haven't replaced a single nut on these.

Right you are. I did replace the nut. Definite improvement.

So, looks like those would have a hard time hanging on wall hooks. My T-type is a Peavey and the headstock pooches out past the nut so it's not an issue. Steinberger is of course the worst, but Parker wasn't so hot in that regard either.

    WORLD CUP UPDATE

I’ve been doing the a/b/c with the two blondes and a sparkly red Squier tele with another 920D wiring harness and Lollar pickups. I’ve been releasing endorphins off and on now for a couple of hours, and while I like all three for different reasons, I gotta say the new arrival is ahead. It sounds more like a Telecaster than the other telecasters, and the neck feels real good.

I’ll probably change my mind tomorrow.

I've been there too. It's amazing how beer makes it easier to spend money! I'm glad it worked out well for you. I have had lots of Squiers over the years. Great value for money and great fun to mod.

Nice I like them both, congrats. I started my Tele journey with a Squier CV-50 white blonde and absolutely love the sound of it. Then purchased a 2015 MIM standard in polar or arctic white. Changed the pickups to Tonerider Hot Classics in the MIM, I still like the sound of the Squier better. The feel of the MIM is better of course.
    Enjoy yours.

Not a problem. The hooks need to rotate about 35°, but I have my Teles on wall hooks and they are quite secure.
