I bought a '52 AO Telecaster on Craigslist and when I got it home I noticed a weird mark on the back of the headstock. The body looks right, actually, everything looks right. I took the pick guard off, no issues, neck and body cavity look right. The place where the neck anomaly isn't where a "MX" number would be. Neck and body dated "Aug, 18 2012" leads me to think it is an AVRI model. Serial number V1204220.

    What do you guys think?

bad luck, @Larmo63 - the pic of weird mark on back of the headstock didn't show up on my screen.

edit - now I see a few more images - we may be pecking into our phones @ same time

The frets look awfully low, it looks like vintage frets? but it's not too rounded for a 7.25" radius?? im getting confused. LOL

Body looks too opaque for the current finish of the AO 50's..

This is currently from Stratosphere and the body is dated 2017.. Not sure if Fender can keep that kind of body for 5-6 years and to assemble into an American Original 50's model which was introduced back in 2017-2018..

if its legit, it probably is an 2012 AV which is the more desirable because its the closest to the original 50's telecaster in terms of finish and specs..

but if its not, probably a partscaster?

Better email Fender on that serial number to get the full info on it..

Looks like an AV52 to me too. I’d rather have one of those than an AO, personally, but I’m not sure how the two compare on the used market, or what that means in relation to what you paid for the guitar.

    Great looking guitar though, congrats!

    Looks legit to me.
I can see the pic showing the back of the headstock, but I cannot see what the « strange mark » is: all I see is some kind of small blur onto the finish (may be a little defect from the factory), and a bit of gunk underneath the low E tuner.
Does the guitar play and sound good?

Looks like an AVRI to me based on the finish. The AOs show the wood grain a lot more. The date also seems to suggest the same. Do you have any way of measuring the fretboard radius?

Also, the bridge plate and saddles look pretty gunked up. That guitar would have to have been played quite heavily over two or so years if it was an AO.

What's the radius? Doesn't look all that curved for a 7.25.

And 52s from back then were very orange, and yours doesn't look very orange. But that could just be the pics.

And I could be wrong about all this. I hope it's what you hope it is.

The body color from what I can tell is consistent with a 52AV from roughly mid 2012-mid 2017. If that’s what you have I’d be happy. I’m fine with 7 1/4” neck and like the finish more. You might not.

Did Fender make a change in the way the serial numbers are presented to distinguish between the AVs and AOs?

Should be an AV '52 Tele. The AV series replaced the old AVRI series in August 2012; they were likely making those models a month or two prior to the announcement/release date which was mid-August. Those mid-August dates on the body and neck, plus the V12xxxxx serial number would line up with an AV as well - the prior AVRI did not have a "V" prefix, just a number on the bridge plate.

Agree with John. This is a contest between the variants of the AV52, before and after 2012 and this is the "after" version. But all of these were 7.25 board radius and 6230. The "AO" model didn't come along for something like 5-6 years after this guitar was minted. So, the vendor has messed up and if you negotiated for an "AO" he should've easily known he couldn't deliver one.

But these are really nice guitars. Better than AO, I think. Maybe you could negotiate a small refund. I mean, I can maybe see you not liking this because it wasn't what you bargained for, but these make me happy.
