So, the story begins when I was 14 years old. I remember having a conversation with a fellow student (who played guitar) about this pretty patterned guitar that I'd seen on the TV the previous evening played by Chris Difford of Squeeze. From that point on I wanted to play guitar and be in a band like Squeeze and that's also where my love affair with Telecasters began as both Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook played Tele's.

Now fast forward to 1994 I think, there was an interview with Chris and Glenn in Guitarist magazine, which is where I found out that the guitar was a paisley Tokai. According to Chris "the neck was pretty crap so I had Danny Ferrington to make a replacement" the pickups were also changed to Fender OV's. This was his main guitar for many years and until recently was his back up.

In the years that have passed I probably become the world’s biggest Squeeze fan even to the extent I had Glenn Tilbrook play at our wedding reception. A short while ago I was with Chris at his London house and who'd of thought that 23 years later that "pretty patterned" guitar would be MINE!

Thank's. It's like all my Tele dreams come true. Now I've got to find that copy of Guitarist as I'm sure there is a picture of her in there. I've somehow mislaid mine.

Great story, sweet guitar and Congrats. I would get some pics of him with it. I'd also ask for him to write you a note about the guitar, provenance.

Here's another Squeeze connection for ya:
My mom and her mom are from England. Apparently the bass player is my second or third cousin or some other distant relation. I learned this last year.

If only I had David Gilmour play at my wedding, instead of that drunk Banjo player, the Workingman Tele could be mine.

Anyway, congrats on a great story and great guitar

Thnak you for all of your kind comments, it really has made me a happy bunny. I'll post some more pictures later today. The neck has got some fine figuring on it - half birdseye, half flame.

Congratulations! Great Story and it must be like a dream come true. Nice looking guitar, too. As has been recommended, you should definitely get Chris to write up some sort of note of provenance for you.

I saw Squeeze when they toured Cool For Cats in the spring of '79, and then again when they toured East Side Story in '81 or '82 (memory gets hazy here) - I'm pretty sure that Carrack was with them at the time, as I remember the keyboard player singing Tempted:rolleyes:

Anyway, they were a great pop group at a time when there weren't so many around.
    Cheers,
    john

    +1

They do them more accurate than Fendr does.

Cool story I love stuff like this.

    Congratulations!
Difford and Tilbrook rival that other British song writing duo, IMO.
Saw em' here a couple of years ago and Difford was playing a paisley.
Tilbrook is a bada** guitar player!

I swear it you put a late 60's telecaster style neck on that with F tuners, everybody would have thought it was original, thats how good the 80's Tokai paisleys were.

Don't worry about that, I have suitable documentation. But, it's actually of little use as she's not going anywhere.

To answer another question - the tuners are Kluson's.
And another answer - Yep, would have been 81 with Paul Carrack on keyboards.
