Bought this Epiphone Les Paul. Bummed by a few things. The frets are pretty rough. I can fix that and enjoy that kind of work, so minor bummer there. But what to do with this 16th fret? Whatever finish they used, they missed half of the 16th fret and a few other smaller spots.
Really don’t wanna go through the hassle of returning it. Plus, I played it quite a bit last night and kind of bonded with it.
I was thinking maybe just touching it up with a bit of tru-oil.
    Advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I bought a new ES-339 a few months ago. The fretboard had some dark stuff covering up the Pau Ferro fretboard. Looked like pencil lead on my fingers after I'd played it for a few hours. I'm guessing that's the dye. Play it and see if the stuff comes off on your fingers. All of mine came off after a couple of good sessions, and the board went from mostly dark to pretty darn light.

    It's simple.

-If it bothers you beyond bearable then return it and get another one just like it, you'll bond with it again right away if you bonded with this flawed one.

-If you have the skillset and tools to do the job, and enjoy doing extra work that shouldn't be done on a new guitar, go ahead and tinker away.

I personally would send that gtr back and get a another new one without any of those issues.

BTW is a good looking guitar. YMMV

I don't think there should be any finish.
It probably needs to be scraped off the other 21 1/2 frets.

I know you may not want to hear this, but - send it back. Your dollars are just as good as anyone’s, no reason for substandard.

Yeah I’m pretty sure there shouldn’t be any kind of a clear finish on the fretboard. It may have just been a dye or some sort of conditioner that should have been cleaned off.

I don’t know of any rosewood boards that have a finish other than a Ric.

    That’s what I’m looking for!
Agreed but I’d like to improve it.

    I just looked again...it's weird.
Hard to imagine how it happened.
Does it appear to be a hard finish that could crumble/chip off?
Many Epis have sort of a greasy/waxy finish that scrapes off with a razor blade.
Lean the blade in the direction you're going and scrape; don't push it like you're shaving.
    Some naphtha may help.
Your finish is impervious to even acetone, but I wouldn't risk it because it could melt the binding or fret markers.
    Cool looking git.
Great color and I like the missing poker chip.

It's more likely to be a fretboard dressing unevenly applied. There should be no finish on a rosewood or Pao Ferro board. May even have been applied at the shop.

Unfortunately I had to leave town the day after it arrived. So haven’t had a chance to fully investigate.
    Appreciate all the input guys.

That might be the case. I’ve spent a bit of time with it it now. My fingertips are black within 5 min.
I’ll change the strings soon and put some work into it. I have to polish the frets anyway.
But I’m certain it’s a keeper either way. Feels and sounds amazing and all I’ve done is tune it. Besides, I’ve ran it past a couple people and nobody else noticed the blemish.
    Possibly I was overthinking it.
