This NGD is both correcting 20-years of seller's regret, and solving a lack-of-pickup-test-mule issue. Recently, I asked about the differences between '98-'05 MIM Standard Teles and the '06-'18s. Received some very helpful, well-informed responses. See, I bought an MIM Standard Telecaster new in '98. It was my first Tele, even though I had been playing 15 years or so by then. Anyway, played it a couple of years before selling it to buy a new ash-body AmStd Tele. Which, yes, I later sold. A few years ago, I built a partscaster to replace that one. Recently, I decided I needed a new test plank for pickups. So I went looking for another MIM in the same color as my first Tele. Ya know, banged-up examples are easy to find, but nicer ones are a bit more scarce. Here's an '06 that arrived today from Georgia:

It's nice to have one again. Will be looking for some fat blues tones and finally trying a 4-way switch. Pickup recommendations welcome, of course.

    Congrats!

Texas Specials* with Emerson 4-way switching (reversed, Kirchen style). Wilkinson bridge, tusq up top, locking tuners. I will never sell this thing.

*The neck pickup is really lovely in my opinion, and I've seen it echoed here. Bite and twang in the bridge is what I want there out of a Tele, but the neck is just unreal.

Very nice! I picked up one of these for about $250 a few years ago.

I put a different neck (rosewood board) on it, a black pickguard on it, and took off the neck pickup cover and put on an open top one and gave it to my wife's cousin.

    Great axes. Congrats!

    That is gorgeous!
I love midnight wine, I have a custom in process about 10 months in and it will be midnight wine, signed on the finish spec pretty recently. Love that color.

Anyway, I love Fralin Tele pickups. Give them a shot if you haven't already. The fact that they do no endorsements and tone junkies from Frampton to Paisley have to buy them says a lot.

I reccomend Bootstrap pickups. On par with the $200 a set companies, but cost like $70 a set. Ostensibly better than some over $100 sets in some ways.

If I'd known in like 2011 that MiM teles weren't always gonna be popping up for $250-$300, I woulda started buying up the 3 colors I really wanted (midnight wine, graffiti yellow, sage green metallic) back then, when people were willing to part with them reasonably...

    Nice Tele!
I made enough $$ from NYE Gig alone, to get my Midnight Wine new, in March 2004 ( shopped around a few months!)
Mine is all stock ( staying that way), and good for any music I play.

I think the 'middle-of-the-road ( tonally) ceramic pickups help with that, too. Great with OD pedals on positions #1 and #3 and #2 clean, is well-balanced for R&B, any cleaner rhythm and lead.
A little heavy, but a real solid player!

    You got that right.

That purchase was my best CL experience. I get to the guy's apartment and he mentions he has a strap and 3 pedals. Thought he was going to try to sell them but nope, he was just throwing them in for free!

Anyways, I had a MW P bass for a while too (I put that RW board neck on the tele to match the bass).

Did all those MW teles come with maple boards? Not sure I have seen one with an original rosewood one.

I love the MIM alnico pickups, which they swapped for ceramics about 2006. You might check what you have in that one.

Is that(maybe) one of the Ernie Ball guitar straps?
    They are sweet, tasty!

I have 3 EB straps that look similar, for 2 electrics and 1 acoustic- but NOT that pattern- yet!

I remember seeing them in rosewood, but apparently you couldn't order it from MF that way in the mid 2000s . So I guess everything was maple?

I found this one on Craigslist for cheap a few years ago. I had given my son a couple of Squiers and an 80s Ibanez over the years. One Christmas, he told me that he knew I probably couldn't afford one, but he really would like a "real Fender."

This one came up, so I bought it (along with a matching Ovation Celebrity shallow bowl). He was thrilled to open this one's gig bag that year.

He has been taking it to concerts to have it signed with an enamel paintpen (much more durable than a Sharpie). So far, it has been signed by Tommy Emmanuel, Adrian Belew, Mike Stern, and Eric Johnson.

You two definitely have me considering a pearloid pickguard for this one!
