So, I grabbed one of these from Amazon last week after glowing reviews from @FenderGyrl and @Obsessed. I have to admit, their reviews were spot on. I've never been so impressed with a $169 guitar. It was playable right out of the box with the stock strings. I can't believe they are able to sell guitars this cheaply today.

It has a decent acoustic tone and sounds great plugged in. It's nicely appointed. The tuners work. The wood grain shows through the finish. To be fair, it has a few finish blemishes, but I cannot complain given the cost of the instrument.

I ordered some light gauge flats and a wooden bridge for it.

I see that they are currently sold out on Amazon but if you can get your hands on one, I highly recommend it. I'm just keeping mine at the office to have something at work to jam on during lunch. I couldn't be happier.

Some people enjoy being frugal. I know I do. It was born out of necessity, during my "child"-support years, nowadays it just feels right though, and I view it as a challenge.
That's the only way i grew my guit-stable up to the ridiculous number that it's at, by being very deal-conscious.

The reviews are consistent-this is a great guitar.

I do enjoy my frugality, trust me. I like saving where I can. However, my other guitars are a Gibson VOS '59 ES-175 and a Fender AVRI '62 Telecaster. I'm not cheap. I just don't have a P90 guitar and this thing just spoke to me. I sold a cheap Epiphone to raise the funds for the Grote and am loving my decision!

Sometimes you get a great guitar for little cash(especially when the product first hits the market), but later the great ones will be farther from your grasps.

Really though, if you get a good one for little money it's a big win. If not, then it can be unloaded on the bay or CL.

I've had my eye on these for several months. Part of me can't get past the name. It brings to mind the scene from "A Hard Day's Night," where George gets dragged into the office of a teen fad specialist to give his opinion about some shirts, calls them "grotty," and then has to explain what that means.

Looks like a terrific guitar for under $200, though.

    Just pronounce it as Gar-rote,
Then it takes on a sinister vibe.

Wow they had 10 left on Friday after I ordered, and mine came via USPS on a Sunday(!) Checked it over quick when it arrived, I still gotta set it up but looks good so far.

Congrats. I am sensing some consistency here. Glad you are enjoying it. It felt like such a risk talking it up so much, when the next one could be a dog, so it feels good to know that others are experiencing the same thing I am. Still amazes me at this point. I have not decided what strings to get yet for mine, but if I go open A it will be more of a slide guitar for me.

Anyone with some time playing a current Epi Century that could comment on how the two compare?

Yup, me too. I have really nice guitars and wanted to experiment with a P-90. This one, as a P-90 entry fee was good enough to gamble on especially knowing the nice Amazon return policy. Not too much of a gamble really.

My problem is, if I bought one, I worry that I would just keep saying “I am Grote” while I played it.

Also, people might say “I thought at first you were playing your Telecaster, but I realized it sounded more Grotesque than usual”.

Nice looking guitar—hard to beat a jazz box with a P90.

There is an Epiphone Century for sale on the local craigslist.
It'd be interesting to compare them side-by-side, but I'm happy with the Grote copy.

Don't get me wrong, I am all up for being frugal (or be a smart consumer :)) and always hunting for the right deal. Also, this guitar certainly looks great, I guess I was just surprised by the amount of hype around it, these days it's very easy to find inexpensive good guitars. Both the new and used markets are pretty much overflowing with artcores, and grotes and lagetors and dolseys and Michael Kellys and on and on and on..maybe I'm wrong but my general feeling is that one can get a good inexpensive guitar at any given time.. It can be for 169.99 like this one or 125 like the artcore FG found in an estate sale or 179.99 or 199.99 the difference is not huge and there all pretty much around the same price range.. Just my opinion.
