Well guys, I went to GC today thinking I would come home with a Gretsch G5655TG Junior. While there, I played one, but just wasn't wow-ed by it. Seemed pretty well made, but they only had white and I'm not into white guitars. And being Made in China kind of bugged bugged me - just a little. ( I know that some products from China can be of very high quality.) I also played a couple of G5420s and they were pretty nice, but just didn't really feel right to me. Deeper body than I really want. Thus, I was prepared to come home today without a Gretsch. Then, I caught a glimpse of a Georgia Green G5622T with Super Hilotrons that was up near the ceiling. This is a model that I didn't think I would be interested in... but guess what... it followed me home, in the back seat of my truck! Plays really wonderfully - no set up required at all. Color is beautiful. But best of all... SUPER HiLo'trons! I was afraid these might be a bit too "warm" and middy for me, but when I heard them through my favorite amp, with my favorite settings, in the comfort of my own music room at home - they sound AMAZING. Clear, bright, jangly, sparkly - just what I love. (I can never properly evaluate the tone of a guitar while at Guitar Center, so I don't even bother trying.) The neck and frets are excellent. And the rosewood board is beautiful. The finish is well-done... and dazzling. Korean workmanship and materials are impressive. Very clean and beautifully done. Out the door price of $679 (15% Labor Day discount)... jeez, this is really a lot of great guitar for $679 and (unlike my "usual" mo) I don't think I'm going to be changing a thing about it. I think this is going to be a long term keeper! Incredibly clear, bell-like, jewel-like tones flow out of this guitar like I've never experienced before. (I love these Super HiLo'trons.) Sure took me a LOOOOONG time to discover "that Great Gretsch tone," but I'm here now! WOO-HOO.
