Got it on eBay. Was advertised as 1982 and the serial number would certainly indicate that. Did they keep making the first issue non Squiers like this along side the Squiers or did they stop when they started to export the Squiers?First thing I do is pull the neck. I’m hoping it has a date but I know some didn’t. Seems this is a pretty rare guitar. It does have a small hairline crack at the neck pocket though. Oh and it’s been refretted and the seller bought it in Japan some time ago.

You can't go wrong with a JV tele - Congrats !
Here you can find answers to all your questions regarding JV guitars: http://21frets.com/
Fender Japan sold them labled as "Fender made in Japan" within Japan. Ther export models for the European market are labled as "Squier" (apart from some rare and early models who where labled as Fender with an additional small Squier logo)
The guitar on my avatar is also a Japan domestic and "Fender" labled TL-52 65 - its a great guitar.
Btw. My guitar has the serial numer on the bridge plate.

I’ve read a bit on 21 frets and it’s been quite exciting finding out what I’ve bought. I also have a couple of Greco’s one a strat made in April 1982 so I’m hoping to see a neck date on my JV when I get it.

From what I’ve read on 21frets my guitar could be April or May 1982 looking at the records of serials and neck dates.
Can’t wait to pull that neck off. Either way I’m pretty happy.

Just a belated update. Got the Tele but no pencil date on the neck but it does have a “6.10 “ ink stamp on the neck. This would be 10 June 1982. This date lines up well with the serial when looking at dates and serials on the 21frets JV registry. This Tele is really loud acoustically and plays great. I tweeked the truss rod and the neck is nice and straight. Loving it.
