I scored a brand-new Fender FSR American Special Telecaster in beautiful Sherwood Green for a great price!

Surprisingly, this particular one seems to have a larger than expected neck on it. It's by no means thick, but it's not as thin as I recall the neck on my old Highway One Strat being.

I'm planning to install a parchment pickguard to replace the stock mint green one. It doesn't look bad in the photos, but the mint green makes the whole package a bit too green in person.

I've also ordered a set of Fender compensated brass saddles. And I may end up ditching the stock Texas Special pickups in favour of a Pure Vintage '64 set.

Anyways, I'm thrilled so far and I think that this will end up being a more vintage-flavoured alternative to my American Pro Tele (Sonic Gray). I think that the two will compliment each other nicely without either becoming redundant.

    Beautiful. I love green guitars.

That rosewood is something special too.

So other than the neck and the pick guard and the saddles and the pickups, you love it? That's a good looking guitar. I'd play it until those "short comings" go away.

    Great Leo that's a perfect Tele. I need this...with a gray-green mint guard though ;)

I love the neck! I was pleasantly surprised that it has a bit more body then I was expecting. Typically, I think American Specials are associated with relatively thin (aka modern) necks. I don't get too picky about neck profiles...but this one was not as thin as I expected and that's a plus in my books.

Everything else - a pickguard, saddles, and pickups - I was expecting to change from the onset. I love Sherwood Green and there aren't a lot of off-the-shelf options in order to get it...I don't like that they paired it with a mint green pickguard...but that's an easy/cheap fix (and obviously just a cosmetic preference of mine). I've ended up putting compensated saddles on all of my Telecasters...and, for the sake of consistency, I'm going to do the same here (helps me know what to expect when I'm doing set-up and intonation work). Nothing wrong with the stock Texas Specials either...but I've never loved them (although I do prefer Tele Texas Specials over the Strat ones)...anyways, I'm confident that I'll prefer the tone of the Pure Vintage '64s.

I know it's strange to say that I love the guitar and then list a few things that I'll be changing...but I think they're relatively small things overall.

I get it. My favorite guitar right now is a '73 Gibson SG Deluxe. I love the neck and the board and it sounds great. That said, I'm already changing stuff on it. Just got a new AO 50s tele today. Interested to try the 'U' neck, so maybe it will distract me from other loves for a while.

I agree on the parchment guard. A full-on cream could look great too. If the mint green was more authentic looking (it's usually more yellow than green in reality, and rarely uniform across the guard), then it would look great. But they use those uniformly GREEN guards that I like to call Pistachio Ice Cream. Even the ones that aren't as saturated a green still look bad to me.

Dark brownish-red tortoise looks great on Sherwood Green too!

One subtle thing that really helps multi-ply guards look great is the wide bevel, instead of the typical post-1967 45 degree bevel. Pickguardian, Spitfire, and some others, can do that for you. That said, some of your pickguard screws look mighty close to the edge of the bevel, so it might not be possible without drilling a few new holes.

Pretty guitar! I've always liked this version of the Sherwood Green - I once had an AVRI '62 Strat in this color (and always regretted letting that one go).
