Hey all,

Just picked up a Stratocaster to complement my Telecaster. It's a '96 Fender American Lonestar Strat in Shoreline Gold. Excellent condition. Feels and sounds great.

Congrats on the new strat. Looks like you have some nice tonal options with the S/S/H setup. Are those Seymour Duncan pickups? Were they stock in the guitar?

Yes, they were stock. It was the first model of the Hot-Rodded series guitars that Fender put out from 1996 to 2001. They're all Seymour Duncans, the single coils are overwound Texas Specials and the bridge is a Pearly Gates Plus that SD designed specifically for this model (Not sure what the difference between it and a normal Pearly Gates is; a web search showed that most people who have the Lone Star couldn't tell the difference between the two).

Nice! I had one of those from that same year, in fact. I bought it new back in '97. Sold it a few years ago because I just wasn't playing it but it was an excellent guitar.

I used to have a Roadhouse Strat, which was the same guitar, but with a bridge single coil instead of the humbucker. The bassist in my band has a Roadhouse in shoreline gold just like yours. Those 90s Fenders are solid guitars. Wish I still had mine.

My 2000 American Series Texas Special in Shoreline Gold. This was the replacement for the Roadhouse.

I have a 1996 in black w/ rosewood. I love this guitar. From the SD web site: Quote Originally Posted by Evan Skopp View Post

Mike Lewis, who was then head of Fender's guitar marketing (he's now running Gretsch) and I were the ones who worked out the pickups on that pickup. Mike had a background in retail sales knew what the Pearly Gates sounded like and he wanted that tone for this Strat. But, he wanted around 6dB of boost over and above a regular Pearly Gates for the bridge pickup. According to Mike, "When you go into the bridge position, I want a noticeable boost. And the Texas Specials are already on the hot side." So we took a stock Pearly Gates, changed the magnet from an Alnico 2 to an Alnico 5, and added a few hundred more turns. And viola! The Pearly Gates Plus was born.

The singles are Fender Texas Specials, not SDs.

I picked up a '99 in Metallic green about a year ago. One of the best playing strats I've ever had. I didn't care for the bucker in mine, but it wasn't the original. I've toyed with putting in a PG but never got around to it. Happy NGD!
