I ordered a custom D-28 thru Reno's Music, Guitar hotline, earlier this year and it arrived Friday afternoon! I was fortunate to have placed my order just prior to Mark's (Reno's expert) trip to Martin's factory in Nazareth Pa. Mark was able to hand pick my wood! I placed my faith in Mark's wisdom & I'm very happy with what he delivered, both sound & beauty!

    The specs:
    D-28
    Madagascar back & sides,
toasted Adirondack top (I'm a fan of torrefied adi tops)
hide glue construction throughout (It's not hype imho, its a plus)
Modified low oval high performance taper neck, which I love
    Forward shifted scalloped bracing
    Schaller grand tuning pegs

She's a beast! Kicks like a mule, rings like a bell, and thumps my chest. This is my 4th transaction with Reno's Guitar hotline. I have no affiliation, but I am a happy customer. Reno's should be on your short list when you're shopping for a guitar, especially a Martin. Here's pics:

I'm surprised & thrilled how tight the adi grain is.

Almost impossible to capture the grain of the madi:

She rings like a bell, unreal

Nothing like a nice D28. Enjoy it!

Can you post bigger photos, especially of the madagascar? If you have the photo on your computer, just drag the file onto the browser page, et voila!

Did you specify the herringbone trim for the D28? If I'm not mistaken, on current production guitars that is only on the HD28, not the D28?

Yes, very true, the base model was/is an HD28. I should have specified the herringbone, but I think of all the 28 variants as a D28.

PS: My goal was to come as close as possible to a 1937 D-28 Authentic, but with a modern neck. As a prior owner of an Authentic, I think they nailed it.

    She sure is purty!

Taylor's are nice, but seem to be bright, yet quiet, in comparison to Martin's.

Martin's (I sold my DC16GTE and bought a DCRSGTE and GPCRSGT) are warmer and louder. I love my Martin guitars! :)
