I brought this home with me last night. I went to a Fender Custom Shop Road Show event at Music Zoo in Farmingdale on Long Island. Ron Thorn and Paul Waller talked about and showed some of their latest creations. One that was particularly impressive was the California Special, an offset body guitar with three pickups where the middle pickup is placed right behind the bridge pickup. CS only... for now.

There was a raffle where they gave away CS pickup sets, a loaded Stratocaster pick guard, straps and tools and other cool stuff. A guitar was the last prize in the raffle. The last road show I went to, the guitar was a higher level MIM. This time it was a heavy relic CS '69 Stratocaster with a reverse headstock, reverse bridge pickup, loaded CS case, and more. When I heard my name called as the winner I couldn't believe it. I never win anything... ever. I'm out of quarters way before my wife at the slots. I could hardly stand up. I was shaking. Such great folks at Music Zoo, CS, and all the other folks at the event. Thank you to anyone there who sees this thread.

I brought it home and plugged in. I sure like it. Amazing clarity and depth. It’s sure different from my American Standard. My wife came down from upstairs and saw it and asked if I got it at the show. “Were they throwing it out?” There are things (like heavy relic) wives just don’t understand. Only two pics for now I wanted to start playing it as soon as I could. I even skipped dinner. C55B926C-41D1-493F-BB8D-E7825610BBCD.jpeg AB42ABC8-85A5-479C-9248-C2A445AD6C83.jpeg

Wow congratulations! Ron's California Special is a really unique instrument and it's nice to see fresh ideas coming from Fender. Also, how cool is the trem unit on those things??

    Incredible. Congrats.

I unboxed one in front of my friendly UPS driver. He said, "I can help get the paperwork started for the damages." I said, Didn't you see me take it out of the pristine boxes and the G&G case?" He said, "Yeah!" I said, "Relax, it was made that way!"

He said, "You're nuts and ran for his truck."

cool - they got your pic up on the website. How many people attended, looked like pretty good odds from the pics.

From the CS pickups, the 69 set is the top choice for me followed by the Fat 50's.
    Good choice.
    Now repaint that thing.;)

Nah. This one gets left alone. I changed the pickups and switching on my Tele and my other Strat. I’m no fan of 60 cycle hum but the pickups in this one are special. My painting skills are limited to a roller on the bedroom walls and I’m not too good at trim so the finish stays just the way it came. I made a snarky comment a few weeks ago about CS just being a glorified partscaster that I wish I could take back. I’ve been set straight about that. This one is a museum piece, scuff marks and all. Thanks everyone. I never expected to ever have anything like this.

Wow! Congrats! What a cool story. And a beautiful and unique guitar. The larger, burst and reverse headstock really works for me. Enjoy! And play some Jimi for us.

What a great story! It would've been killer if you bought it but, to win it too. Awesome. At the LA Amp Show, I saw one guy win an LSL guitar and another guy win a RedPlate amp. It was fun just watching it.
