Hey all, just thought I would share this. I picked this guitar up from an old friend this week. I cleaned it up a little, put new strings on it and took it to the gig tonight. I was going to sell it but I must say after playing it tonight I think I will keep it! It had some really nice sounds in it. It plays very nice. It is almost flawless. There really isn't a mark on it except...the 'plate' on the back is covering some very minor belt buckle marks, only in the finish, not through to the wood. The guy couldn't stand to see those so he put this plate on it!?! I said "you put holes in you guitar!" He laughed and said "that's what your Dad said...I was young and didn't know better" Oh well, it's still a great guitar I think. Hope you all enjoy seeing it.

Man I just got a 72 Deluxe mexican reissue. Can't put it down. Are the Strat knobs on yours? Is that original for 77-78?

I'm glad the previous owner(s) never drilled holes in back of my old JM.

I agree with the above. I'd take that plate off and fill the holes. Though, I'm sure the finish is going to be nice and bright under it, so just start wearing a big belt buckle for awhile.

Congrats on the NGD!

Um...it's a Rear Sustain Plate. It channels the vibrations in the body and mixes them with the vibrations from the neck into one harmonious conglomeration of intregrated vibrating resonance.
(yeah, that's how we'll market it.)

KEEP THAT SUCKA!!

Not going to go into a lot of details 'cause it's late at night for this old guy but I'm pretty sure I just bought this guitar this past weekend at "Daves Guitars" in LaCrosse. 4 little holes that are patched in the exact location as those in the picture of the plate. Same wood grain lines & two dark spots on back of guitar... plays & sounds great!

rickenberry, I just saw this thread had been resurrected. That is indeed my guitar. I'm glad it found a good home, it is a great guitar. I just have too many and have been thinning the herd. :) That guitar came from Iowa to me so I guess its back home now. :-D Congrats!

Hey r1962j..........

I have a reissue of that guitar which I really love. Mine is a black finish and I've had it rewired with just the top volume and tone control working as masters. The bottom two are pull pots activating a phase switch in front and a coil tap in the rear. It's amazing but the rear pickup when tapped sounds very much like a regular Tele bridge pickup and the phase switch when activated with both pickups on gives a very nice nasal Strat/dobro kind of vibe.... I'm adding a Rolling Bender on the B string later this afternoon to give it a little more versatility..... As far as that plate on the back... Years ago when I was in SoCal I worked with a bass player (Tommie Goble) who would buy a piece of peel and stick floor tile and slap it on the back of his bass. When it got too dunged up he'd go get another piece and stick it on there. Worked pretty well too.............JH in Va.

Cool TDPRI NGD story...congrats. I have never played a Tele with WRHBs (new or old versions). Need to fix that one day.

lose the plate. It's awesome BTW, I don't thinks I've seen a butterscotch DLX before.
