I'm absurdly excited about this.
I've wanted a big Gretsch hollowbody since I was in 8th grade and saw Chris Cheney from The Living End playing a White Falcon on TV (on this old HBO show called Reverb. They had a bunch of weird bands.) Anyways. I got obsessed with The Living End throughout high school and he was my favorite guitarist. I always told myself that if I ever had the money I'd buy myself a real MIJ Gretsch hollowbody, and well, circumstances lined up.
Last weekend I sold some mics that I had, a guitar, and some records which net me almost the exact amount of this guitar on Reverb. I got it from Franklin Guitar Works, which from what I've read is a company that takes returns / overstock from companies, makes sure they're in working condition and re-sells them at a discount. These go for $2300 new, it was $1850 used on their page, and then they had a 20% off sale last weekend, which put this in my money sweet spot. From what I can tell the guitar is brand new. It came with all of the case candy, COA, etc... I can't find a scratch on it anywhere and it all works perfectly. So I dunno.
I just got this a couple of hours ago, so I haven't had the opportunity to really put it through its paces, but from my quick playing / quick setup and restring, I'm a big fan. The FT67 Filtertrons, despite being slightly souped up, according to Gretsch, give that classic Filtertron sound still, maybe with a slight bit more oomph. But it nails the sounds that I want to nail. I think between this and my Players Edition Duo Jet that I have the Gretsch sounds I need covered.
If you'll excuse me, I'll be playing my favorite pop-punk/psychobilly riffs on this thing for the foreseeable future. Also, enjoy the bonus picture of the new Gretsch with my old Gretsch, a Players Edition Duo Jet (modded with a Chet bar, compton bridge and TV Jones classics.)
