On impulse (that should be my middle name) I bought a '18 Road Worn 50s Tele from GC for a good price ($575). Id read somewhere that they were good guitars and lighter than my current American Special Tele, which is an issue because I have a wrecked shoulder, so my 8 lb AS is a bit too heavy. I picked up the RW tele today and a few observations:

-Sounds surprisingly good. Maybe the PO installed aftermarket pups, but it sounds great.
-The neck feels REALLY good. Id read somewhere that its a 7.25 neck, but it feels more like a 9.5 to me.
-Im undecided on the appearance. Whilst I like the lacquer finish, I generally dont like the idea of a relic'd guitars. It seems like a lie/poser thing to do that instead of actually wearing it yourself (this is JUST MY OPINION, no offense to anyone).

But, I kinda love this thing. It has vintage vibe in spades. The relic'ing is actually not too bad. It really looks and feels like my old beat up 1990s MIJ Thinline. Hell, its almost as light! This one comes in at 7.2 lbs. Im not thrilled with the beat up looking headstock, though. it doesn't look real to me, it just looks like my 6yr old smacked it with a piece of rebar a bunch of times. But overall, I have a feeling Im gonna grow to love it. It just feels great. Plus, I love sunburst finishes. Anyone else have one of these? Id love to hear from you.

6.6 lbs is the slam dunk for me. Im keeping' her, "relic'd" or not. I dont think I'll find a Tele that light unless I fork over big bucks for an AVRI or Custom Shop relic.

By all accounts, they are good guitars, sound great, and are underpriced and undervalued. Personally, I dislike the truly bogus relic job on those very, very much, but it wouldn't lead me to get rid of one if it came my way. Ultimately, sound and playability rule for me -- the other stuff is secondary, and I'm not about to get bent out of shape if a good guitar is relic'd. I'd just enjoy the guitar.

My tele's headstock has the same wear pattern - but mine got that way from an incident in an airplane luggage compartment somehow...looks like "real" damage to me.

The relic job on it is so subtle and there is no cheesy looking fake wear.If it sounds and plays great then just enjoy it!!

I would LOVE to see pics of that one. Is it made out of Ash?

4108DA3C-5EDF-4658-8950-B1953DAB9CED.jpeg Here’s mine: a 2017 for $725 so you got a screaming deal! Mine weighs 7.4 lbs. so yours is lighter too.

I changed the pickguard to Vintage Cream and the saddles to Glendale Brass Compensated saddles. It also has a bone nut and pro setup.

    I love it!

Awesome! I have some brass Gotoh Compensated Saddles and white relic'd pickguard coming in the mail, but Im gonna look around for a 5 hole tortoise shell one. I also have some Pure Vintage '51 Nocaster pickups I may install, or not. These pickups sound really good.

I love the stock Tex Mex pickups. If it weren’t for my American Special Tele, this would be my number one.

Is your American Special as heavy as mine? Mine is about 8 lbs.

My American Special is exactly 8 pounds and I think that’s average.

It makes my Road Worn 50s seem light.

    Congrats!
Don't worry about the relic job, this is just a great looking telecaster. Enjoy.
