I've been seeing a lady for a year or so whose family is just as much into small pets, as I am into dogs.
The daughter, Darby, is 22 years old. She and her husband have two birds, one chinchilla, a betta fish named Avery, and now two guinea pigs, Autumn and Mocha. Mocha came home today as kind of a rescue.
It seems that a local pet store was looking for her a good forever home. I'm not sure if she was returned or what; but Mocha has a neurological disorder and needs special attention. This pet store is familiar with my girlfriend's daughter Darby, they know how she cares for her small pets, and thought she would give this one the ideal home.
(Guinea pigs are frequently abandoned just like any other pet, if their owners decide they're inconvenient for any reason. My ex and I were once offered a beautiful one at Petco, for free, complete with an enclosure and lots of accessories--because it had been left at the door of the store after hours sometime overnight. )
Anyway, I'm excited to meet Mocha next weekend. I understand she's sweet and playful and likes to cuddle.
The difference in what I'm used to, is that when guinea pigs need to relieve themselves...they just do, with no warning. On the floor, in your lap, in the car, etc.
I'm used to dogs who occasionally have an accident, but only because I probably ignored their signals.
Darby sent me this cartoon a while back, that pretty much sums it up.
But...I guess I'm learning to love cavies as well as canines. I'm just glad to see a needy little animal find its best place.
