One of the first lessons I learned gigging (almost 30 years ago now) was break your gear down fast and be cool to the rest of the bands on the bill.

Last night, we drove 2 hours to play second at a dive bar. It's what punk bands do, ok :)

Opening band of 20-somethings strolls in with drums in giant gig bags and proceeds to slowly unfurl close to $10,000 worth of beautiful new gear. Guitarist and bassist each has a spare. Drummer has a lovely new ludwig Bonham-style kit and vintage '60s cymbals.
The crowd is huge already for the small space.
    And then they just wait....
    And wait....
    And then play an hour.
    And then break down slowly.
    And then just bail.

Oh, and then the headliner had to borrow our bass head, guitar amp, and a cord. Lol!
At least they were damn good and decent guys.

Good to see things haven't changed.
    Thanks for reading.
I'm just tired because I'm a grumpy old man who drove home at 3am. But at least you guys understand.

Grumpy old men shouldn’t be in punk bands! I gave that life up years ago.

Punk is lost on the phone generation. That level of connectedness and public approval neediness and punk do not jibe.

Lots of guys in cargo shorts and oakley sunglasses playing the blues, but it doesn't make it right, nor does it makes them bluesmen.

I'm a grumpy old man and I don't want to be in any band. Fortunately, the band I have with my coworkers only plays three times a year. More than that would be more than I can handle at this point. I hate loud bands, and even more, I hate moving gear. And I don't like punk music at all. Good thing I can stay at home and play whatever I like.

It is possible to go to shows and identify oneself as punk while being a phone-slinging social media-dependent, or a name-dropping punk curator elitist.

    Discuss!

I had a couple of “friends” ( their idea) to open at a gig we booked in exchange of using their small PA. After they played they took the PA and left.. this was in 1978..

I would have only been upset if the crowd bailed when the opening band did...

I liked this thread better the first time, when it was posted to talk bass. What is this, reddit?

Punk was always about being an individual in a conformist sort of way was it not? You looked/acted different around the "normal people" but looked/acted like everyone else at a punk show. Punks were looking for public approval from the other punks.

The kids today are doing the same thing they're just using the internet/phones to try and stay connected with the other punks all the time to reinforce in their head that being a punk is the right thing to do.

At least that's they way they see it.

No different than any other tribe.

    - The skateboarders look different from mainstream but get a bunch of them together and they look conformist
    - Motorcyclists do the same thing

Blooz lawyers, etc.. the stereotype is there cause you get a bunch of them together and they all dress/act/buy stuff in a similar way.

I'd say there's a strong argument that a huge gear setup isn't punk I guess.

I hope they bailed out before they were going to get paid.

I would agree that the band playing long is not cool, unless the crowd is demanding it of course. Doesn't sound like the case here. If the band splits after their set, I would have no problem with that. I/we play for the audience. I don't require other musicians to be in said audience. If they are, then cool, I guess. Nothing like another band leaning against the bar critiquing your every move! lol

Punk is so cliche (and has been for decades).

To me, nothing is more real punk than old guys rocking out in cargo shorts and sandles/socks.

PUNK WAS NEVER ABOUT FITTING INTO AN ESTABLISHMENT MOLD. It was about saying F**K YOU to anyone and everything.
