Rings or no rings?

    Hey people,

Just a stupid observation for a Friday morning. Was just perusing my latest AMS catalog. I noticed that shredder brands are no longer putting pickup rings on a lot of new models. To me they look unfinished and kinda ugly. Hope it doesn't make it to Fender and Gibson.

    You guys like or not?

Modern guitars kind of do it their own way. I've got a Sterling LK100D with raw DiMarzos.

I can't find the energy to be bothered. Sorry.

Teles don't have rings around humbuckers in the bridge position, but they are mounted to the pick guard. Now, a Tele with a humbucker and no ring and no pick guard? Who walks around naked?

Shredder guitars? It's an aesthetic. Meh.

The no pickup ring has been a thing since the 80's. It doesn't make me cringe, but I do think it looks unfinished.

    1. They've been around for a long time, not that new.
    2. I don't like them. But it's not complicated to put pickup rings on them.
    3. They are like Cabronitas.

All I'm concentrating on is how much better that Wolfgang would look with black Tele knobs. Now I've noticed they have Jazz Bass-style knobs I can't unsee it.

Yeah, been around for ages. I think EVH claimed better tone when the pup was screwed directly into the body??

Looks terrible and I'm sure it is done just to save a few cents. I usually add the rings myself.

I had a nice little Kramer Focus 3000 that looked a lot like that top one - built in 1980 something!
    I don't mind.

I must confess that first of all I personally do not like that style of guitar ... So without pickguard or pickup rings, it's even more awful to me ! I cast "look ugly and unfinished", de facto.

    But it's me, OK ? :D

    A+!

I don't really like shredder guitars but the direct mount pickups are fine to my eye.

What I think looks really bad (don't be offended) is a Tele with a little pickup shaped ring around the neck pickup.
Looks like somebody had a router accident and covered up the evidence.
    Ask me how I know....

...and there you go. It looks OK on a shredder, but it just looks unfinished on a Tele. I wonder why that is?

I like the look myself. Looks cleaner. Reminds me of the fad of having custom cars look
"shaved" by removing door handles and other protuberances.
