I hadn’t had a bass amp around in a couple years. No bass gigs, all guitar, so I really didn’t have a need for one. But now some bass gigs are on the horizon for next spring and summer, and possibly maybe even some more road stuff.

The cabs are late 90’s SWR. A “Goliath III” series 2x10 and a “Son of Bertha” 1x15. They’re old, and they are not light weight in the least. But they’re in great shape, and they sound amazing. I bought them from a buddy who took really good care of them. Got the pair for $400.

The head is a Markbass Marcus Miller 500. I’ve been looking pretty hard at this head, and when GC ran them for $150 off this week I pulled the trigger. The thing is ridiculous. The brown truck dropped it off today, and ten minutes later I had it hooked up. Maybe it’s underrated in the wattage department, or maybe these speakers are more efficient than I’m used to. I barely cracked it open at all and stuff started falling off the walls upstairs. I’m thinking one cab is gonna be plenty for 99% of my gigs.

What a beast! And yes, I have a hand truck.

I was gonna go with one of the class D lightweight combos that are so popular these days. But when my buddy Roc offered me his old SWR cabs for that price, I had to jump. I don’t figure I’ll ever use both cabs at the same time at an actual gig. But if I ever need to, I have them.

@Jakedog, that is a rig of (modular) doom. Ought to give you some tonal AND scaling flexibility, having two different cabs that also play well together.

The bass player in my band has been downsizing for a while now, sold a ton of Ashdown and Trace Elliot gear. The only heavy piece of gear he has left is a 1x15'' Musicman cab and even has a Neodynum speaker in that. His current rig consists of a Markbass LM3 500 watt which he's thinking of upgrading to the 800 watt version through a Markbass traveller 122 which is also rated at 800 watts. Extremely efficient set up, sounds great and weighs next to nothing, covers pretty much everything we will ever need. His days of lugging heavy gear is gone.

Nice rig. Those MarkBass heads and nice older, heavier cabs can be had for almost nothing and sound really good.
I play a MarkBass 250 and an older GK 210. cost next to nothing.
    Enjoy the BOOOOM!

I’ve got a Fender Rumble 100 with a 15”. It was a convenience trade but I’d much rather have a 2-10 cab and small head.

Those are excellent cabs in my favorite configuration.

Deep, tight, clear and very well built

I ran those two untill i thought i needed a warmer, fatter low end and got a 410hlf Ampeg

Never tried the Marcus model but evey Mark bass I tried was great.
    Nice addition sir

The bass player in my band is currently using an FRFR setup through a powered Yamaha speaker, but he has one of these SWR cabs with an original, heavy SWR rack mount head for it. I think the older SWR rig sounds a bit more in your face, but he likes his FRFR situation better, and it certainly is lighter.

Congrats, nice rig. The bass player in my old band in the 90s ran his GK head through a SWR 4x10 cab and it sounded fantastic. Of course it helped that he was an absolute bad@$$ player! Since then I've always loved how bass sounds with 10" speakers -- just a ton of punch with that size speaker.

I just picked up one of those 1x15s a few weeks ago. I was hoping for smaller, not necessarily lighter (we just downsized from Suburban to a 4-door jeep) and while it sounds righteous, it's not much smaller or lighter (and doesn't sound all that much better) than the 4x10 it's replacing. I did make a lot of 'headway' in the size/weight department by acquiring a Mesa Subway 800 head, way smaller than the M/B bass400 I've been using for the last decade or so.
