Between delivery notification and trying it out was less than 30 min. It sounds really, really good - I was surprised - not a fan of the stock Rat2 currently made. A lot of great sounds in here though. Hope to spend more time with it this weekend, feeding it various pedals to see what kind of sonic glory it will exude.

This celebration calls for a poem!

Three EL-84s for the Elven-kings under the sky,
6L6s for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
12AX7s for Mortal Men doomed to die,
EL-34 for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of MoreTubes where the overtones lie.

One RAT to rule them all, One RAT to find them,
One RAT to distort them all and in the darkness drive them
In the Land of MoreTubes where the overtones lie.

How does this compare to the regular rat and turbo version?

    I have had and tried:

Original Rat (small square box,) Turbo Rat, Rat 2, You Dirty Rat, and now the Fat Rat.

The Turbo sounds more open and less compressed because it uses LEDs instead of silicon diodes - only real difference.

The "regular rat," we'll assume current production Rat 2, I am not sure there is a whole lot of difference with Fat Rat using the stock switch settings. On Proco's website they said in this setup, the FR is the same as a WFRI, except for the OP07 chip. If you drop an lm308 in there you have a WFRI rat, which from my understanding is the quintessential rat sound.

I think there might be a little more highs/fizz with the OP07, not sure. I have an NOS Motorola LM308H (LM308 in metal can package instead of 8-leg chip) inbound and plan to drop that in place of the OP07 chip. Will post any difference I notice.

If there is a difference, I could hear it, sitting in front of my amp at reasonable volumes, no other sound around. In a live setting, no way could I perceive any difference between this Fat Rat or any other current production rat with similar diodes. I think they would be indistinguishable.

The Fat and mosfet settings tend to darken the Rat a bit, with fat adding a bit more low end. Not sure I like it better or not yet - I think it will largely depend upon how much you want the Rat cutting through the fabric of the universe when your playing. The "Fat" and "Mosfet" settings will probably pull it back in the mix a little bit, but its still all Rat.

I’m curious to hear your report on the mod after you drop in the LM308 can. I bought a rat clone from Jam Pedals before I had even known the history of the Rat. I just bought it because it sounds so good.

FWIW, I received my FATRAT yesterday and A/B’ed it to my Vintage Reissue (big box). As others have mentioned in other reviews, the FATRAT is more lively & less compressed than the original.

Today I dropped a Motorola LM308N into the FATRAT and it’s closer to my Vintage Reissue, but not the same. I guess it’s probably like a WF now. From what I understand, there is a difference in the circuit between Vintage ReIssue and White Face.

Bottom line: the LM308N is staying in. :)

A friend gave me a few LM308s he had in storage and I've got some parts on order to build a clone. My only experience with Rats is a Rat 2 I had a couple years ago that I traded off. It sounded great and I probably should have just kept it. It'll be interesting to see how much of a difference there is between my build and the memory of using that Rat 2.
