I set up the stuff to photograph (I always work from photos), and there was too much sunlight. It just bleached everything out - for example, that fabric is actually dark blue, and the bowl is violet.
I took a few snaps before I realised the problem. Then I closed the curtains to control the light, and took some more snaps with things looking "right." But I found I just preferred the ones where the light was "wrong" so that's what I painted.
As someone once said, art is knowing what mistakes to keep . . .
