I have just acquired a gorgeous parts tele, and it has a birdseye maple mighty mite replacement neck. I really like the shape and feel of this neck, BUT some of the fret ends are sticking out just too far.

I was wondering what the best method is for filing these down. Do I mask off the neck so that I don't mar it? Things like that.

    Any help is appreciated.

:) This thread seems to come up about once a week in the winter time!

I haven't found a method yet that doesn't involve marring the finish at least a little bit. The method I just used and like most is a sanding block and 800 grit paper, then polishing out the sanding scratches.

I have a Mighty Mite neck that seems to get really really bad fret sprout too but I have several Warmoth necks that seem to be almost immune to this issue. Is there a good explanation for this other than Warmoth probably using higher quality wood with a much lower moisture content?

I don't know - different climates do different things.

I wanna hurry and get these 8 USACG necks out of San Luis Obispo County and down to New Orleans - plenty of humidity year round.

All the import necks have long wire; the Allparts necks I have need lots and lots of work. Meanwhile, these USACG Brett Faust fretted necks are ready to play.
