It's a strange and difficult thing to wrap my head around: that we will not be having any more conversations, I will not hear his jokes, I will not hear his voice, I will not see his beautiful blue eyes

There's nothing to say, really, but anyway, sorry for your loss. My Mom passed last year at 93. I learn more ways I miss her every day. I'm also learning that whatever parts of her she managed to teach me, or build into me as a kid, are what remains of her on this planet. I'm glad I get to be that person in her absence.

I don't know you outside of what you write here, but you strike me as being a good man - and i'm sure it's in no small part your dad's doing. Live his memory as he lives in yours.

Peace to you and your family.

Speaking of which, what’s that on top of the bookshelf? Looks like a combination grill, wine troth and good old fashioned cod piece. Nice!

These two sentences say it all BT:

"When he turned ill, he did not tarry long.

He passed yesterday in my mother's, his wife's arms. She was cradling his head and softly singing hymns to him, while he took his last breath."

Victory is exactly what he has. Not suffering long and departing in the presence of loved ones is the best we can hope for. Still not easy for those left behind though.

I just got back from a 5 day hospice visit with my mom. Sadly she is a little too stubborn to not tarry. Every breath of every day is a major accomplishment, not to mention all the other basic functions of life that we take for granted until such time as they become a monumental effort.

I'm sorry you lost him but I'm glad he's done suffering. I'll be thinking of you buddy. It's hard.

He didn't suffer a long, drawn-out decline, and he was surrounded by love at the end.

That's the best any of us can hope for.

Losing your father is a huge life event. Mine's been gone for 25 years, I miss him all the time, he was so young (67)

Again, thanks guys. It amazes me how every little thing that I do, no matter how small, is in some way connected to him. I knew it on some level earlier, but I am recognizing that fully now, and it's profound to me.

You will likely notice it even more over the next couple of years. I find myself doing the same.

Sorry for your loss, brother. My dad also went out at the hospice at the VA. It will be 3 years come February. He was 86 . He was military through and through and was proud to be at the VA when it ended. He had a military funeral. I have his flag and a piece of brass from one of the rifles.

That is my lamp that I found to be a bit bright, and put bottles in front of in hope of diffusing the light some.
I plan on getting a lower-watt bulb tomorrow
