Can someone explain what this is and means in a pedal like this: "Lundahl transformer"?

I have a friend who has a decent recording setup in his house and was initially excited about the "Neve" thing and the "Lundahl transformer". But then when he saw the price he basically said well I can get an actual preamp with a Lundahl transformer for a lot less.

Not interested in the pedal. But didn't really understand and figure someone here might.

Lundahl makes high grade transformers for audio applications like mic pres, and microphones.

This device wouldn't know if a radio shack transformer or the world's most expensive was in there.

Thanks. So basically this type of device is not really using the Lundahl transformer to it's potential? Kind of what I suspected and maybe that's what he was trying to explain to me.

Its a selling point item, yes. Think of it in terms of an amp transformer. If they are electronically identical, are you going to hear the difference in a paper bobbin vs plastic? The wire type used? Still selling points ...

Maybe a good analogy would be simply calling something premium grade leather as opposed to Corinthian leather?

Yeah, IMO, the word Lundahl is supposed to be a single word stand-in for saying that everything with this pedal is Rolls Royce-grade, so to speak.

If it were an amp, I guess the typical amp maker might be pushing something like Mercury Magnetics transformers. While there is certainly nothing wrong with the MM products, IMO it's the 'same difference' as explained above.

...People think that Leo and Jim paid a premium for special laminates and wire, and wound them in some ultra-special way. They think there was a lot of spec'ing for the size and all of that, but many are shocked when they analyze the iron in some of the extra special sounding amps, only to find that the output transformer is 'clearly undersized,' or something like that.

I'll try not to get too far O/T, but suffice it to say that just a garden variety Hammond output transformer for a Fender DR tends to sound great for a ton of applications, and there's absolutely nothing special about it.

Coming back to Mercury Magnetics, IMO the 'telltale sign' that you're paying 'a lot extra' for 'unnecessary overkill' was when they offered upgrades to the Blackheart Little Giant to add a tube rectifier to it. Why is that revealing? A single-ended amp receives no sonic benefit from a tube recto, because the single tube is operating all the time - you won't get 'sag' or any of those qualities like you will with a class AB or push/pull type of tube power amp.

And - you could probably put 20" wheels with Pirellis rated for speeds of 200mph on a Ford Focus, but how much more performance would that get you? Point being that even if there's something special about the transformer in this thing, what about all the other links in the chain?
