Near as I can tell the problem is there are just too many critical issues that cannot be discussed without resorting to thisism or thatism.

We may be entering an age where it becomes clear that it may be dumb to be smart.

Looking around at the state of humanity and our home planet, seems many of our smartest ideas aren’t working out very well in the big picture.

You really can't cure stupid, but you can beat a large portion of it right out of the one wearing it. I've seen that happen more than once. I also have been on the receiving end of that lesson. My last lesson taught me to steer clear of riding in Crown Victorias for good. I would take a bus ride through Watts at midnight on a Saturday night to avoid one of those Crown Vic rides.

Agreed, and the dumbing down of speech may actually be smart, if that’s what reaches the most listeners.
Psychology is as essential to communication as language.

Of course there are different goals in speaking:
One may want to transfer information clearly.
Or one may want to avoid transferring key information while appearing to be honest and forthcoming.

Here we have seen how adding a misspelled word at the end of a potentially offensive statement makes it more easily tolerated.
Pretty much what dogs do to avoid conflict.
At the same time though, manipulative.

There doesn't seem to be much of an interest in critical thinking. That trend appears to have begun around the same time as the internet, imo. Why should I do any thinking when I can simply let my team captain do it for me? Then I can get back to what REALLY matters... Candy Crush.

If you want to read something impressive, read George Washington's "farewell address": https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Washington's_Farewell_Address

Times sure have changed. Presidents used to know all the best words...

The dumb use of good ideas by greedy people is the problem. Dumb people don’t know when to stop or change. We don’t need more dumb.

Spreadsheets and computer control systems good..
    Faecebook... bad

    Antibiotics... good
Demanding them for a virus or a headache... bad

    Immunisation... good
Telling lies about the science for a vote from their community... bad

The real problem we have is you can have people who are smart and morally lacking... they are master manipulators of the sea of dumb.

umm... you just used those terms as 'a simple easy solution right off the bat without putting any real work into anything'

Has anyone seen that documentary about the state of our society that was filmed in the not-too-far-off future, then sent back in time to us?

    It's called 'Idiocracy.'

    Anyone see it?

A (justifiable) fear of waking up in a world where we are all less smart seems to be a reoccurring theme.

If we could just see into the future we could stop relying on these pestersome studies, graphs, and correlations.....
