Greetings all! I am a long time Strat/Super Strat/SG player who recently saw Brian Forsythe of the band Kix rocking his '71 Telecaster at their show in SLC. I simply must have one now. I am interested in the American Special in Vintage Blonde as it is very similar to his in the looks department. What color pickguards came on the 71's from the factory? I ask because the current special has black and Brian's was white. Forgive me as I am very unknowledgable in the Tele dept!

The majority of 71 Teles I've seen have a white pickguard.

You could easily change the pickguard though.

Thank you! I was just a bit confused because Brian has had both black and white on his baby in the past... currently he has a white one

Most would have looked like this with a white pickguard. If the current version has a black one and you prefer white just buy a white one and replace it. You can buy one for about $10.

Any opinions on the American Special Tele? I have an American Standard Strat as a reference

I should get a 71. That would be my birth year Tele!

Bajas (i.e. top of the line MIM) are a great, great option and get much love on this forum. You could go for the 50s (if you want a blonde tele with a chunky all maple neck) or the 60s (rosewood board, rounder neck than “modern C” but not so hefty, and custom colors such as Sonic blue and Candy apple red).

While shopping for my second tele, I made fairly extensive trials and I consistently preferred Bajas to any other teles in their price bracket, including Am Special. Eventually I bought a 60s, as I liked both the looks and the neck. As a bonus, Bajas have a broader tonal palette (I don’t use it … their basic tele tones are great and all I want from them).

Give ‘em a try. You seem to aim for a blonde tele – that would be a 50s Baja. It comes with a black guard, but the swap is easy – I take the opportunity to show my other tele (a 2011 60th anniversary) before and after the cure :)

Happy to oblige! No dedicated pic I fear. Here with her sisters, the blonde tele and a sonic blue Classic Player '60s strat. There is not one thing I don’t like about the Baja!

BTW: if you are curious about the idea behind the Classic Player 60s, watch this. It does not represent all a Baja 60s can do for you tonally (not by a very long stretch) but it’s a fun vid:

Thanks a lot. Yes it is – in person more than in that pic. And it plays and sounds great, too!

I have a Special and its a very very good guitar. A+ if you like old school bridges etc.. I like the CS Texas Specials (kinda SRV meets twang) The AM Special's neck is what sold me.. thin and 9.5 (the perfect radiis!) 9.5 gives me total maneverability and the jumbo fretts make it really easy to bend up whole tones +... American quality... My Special plays better than my Closet clssic..

Yet.. the Baja is a beast. I don't own one,, but they have a lot of cool features and people here rave about them...
