I'm terrible at that, but 49 I think... Route 110 / Huntington. You are / were a Long Islander?

I have had some Long Island/New York/New Jersey friends over the years.
It's a standard joke.

"You're from Jersey? What exit?"

"You're from Long Island? What exit?"

:)

Yep, people I know are much better at that then I am... and I'm born and bred LI! To me, it's Huntington Village and 'out east'. Those are my 2 bearings :)

Whoa! Tell more about that!
Got lucky on this. Was in kind of a playing rut and thought a teacher would be good. This was a few years after being back in NY from GIT. Found the ad in the Village Voice and gave a call. LOL, no email then. Emily was in Brooklyn and I'd drive out once a week or so over the summer. Listen to a Mets game on the way in or out in my 280Z... fun times.

Honestly I had no idea who she was before calling, and my biggest takeaway was what a genuinely nice person she was. Much as I loved jazz and wanted to be better, my fallback was always sort of a loose (sloppy) blues / jazz feel. She never once gave the feel to me of just how much better than me she was, though of course, obviously she was!

We'd have coffee with those dopey flavored creams and just sit and play a bit for a warm up and talk about stuff other than music, really relaxing. The tune I recall her teaching me was Blues for Herb. I mangled it pretty well but she was really patient. Probably my favorite part of the day would be sitting and listening to her play on the Ovation. Actually, just talking was maybe better... she was SO down to earth with me it was, in retrospect, ridiculous. I'm alternately really sad and really happy when I hear her stuff now, brings me right back to that summer.
