Hello all. Been playin' bass with the buds for about five years. I still suck - LOL. Want to make an entrance to guitar with some open tuning. Since our living room/basement band does some stones covers - i thought that i would start with some open g. Been a long time lurker around these parts. Looking forward to being part of the community.

Welcome. This is a great forum with tons of information. There are no dumb questions, so just ask.

I'm a big Keith Richards fan, so Open G tuning is something I'm into. I have an MIJ '95 Stratocaster that I have set up as a 5-string (low E string removed). Once you get into open G, you'll find The Stones tunes sound "correct," if you get my drift. Sure, you can play all those songs in standard tuning, but once you play them in open G, you'll hear what I mean. The vibe and feel is definitely authentic to the original recordings. Of course, open G is nice for slide playing also, although open E is my favorite. I also play slide in open A and open D on my lap steel.

I'd start with "Honky Tonk Women" and go from there. Good luck.

I have lived in Oshkosh since 91. My formative years were spent in Great Lakes, Illinois - and that makes me a Bear fan - however it is hard not to respect the Packer organization. I am - however a big Favre fan - having lived here during his whole career.

Berlin is not far and I used to travel there often.

Hi, I'm from Texas and am new here also. Just want to add that I too like an open G 5 string. My main guitar is a tele, but my second is a '76 Musicmaster modified to 5 strings and a sing/hum/sing PU configuration. I also play slide in open G. It has always seemed very natural to me, and since I am a fan of the "Magazine for Mediocre Guitar Players", it gives me a way to bring some variety to my playing.
