just wondered what opinions may exist on -

Buying a ‘new’ guitar from a guitar store, whereby it looks new, however on closer examination it has some scratches (that you can feel with your fingernail) and wear etc from being tried out in the shop.

Obviously this doesn’t affect sound - but do you expect your new guitar to be absolutely perfect (ready for you to impact your own dings and marks) ?

I always go over it. Unnoticeable scratches I can live with. However noticeable ones means I’ll be looking at a floor stick reduction in price.

    Yes I agree.

That said, it seems quite common whereby shop floor stock takes a level of wear and tear along the way, but is still being marketed as new.

Versus the larger warehouse outfits that ship out guitars that have not been opened since leaving Fender...

New is new ... Out of a box ... Mint ... Otherwise... Not new ... Discount needed... Anything hanging on the floor is a demo ... Not mint ... If you like it, demand at least 10-15% off ...

Any gear you buy at any retail outlet should be considered used until proven otherwise.
Exactly what do you think Guitar Center (and everybody else) does with all those 30-day returns?
Even if it's in a shipping box, it's a used return until you examine it.

I require my guitars, new or otherwise to sound great, play great, and look great.
    I do not require perfection.
I don’t care at all if they have minor flaws or imperfections.
Perfection, if it even exists is fleeting.

+1, And if the guy on the floor isn't able to apply a discount ask for the manager.

The amount of heavily discounted used gear is such that I have never felt the need to get involved w/ negotiation over 10%.. I find it’s easy to find lightly used gear for 50% or better, simply by looking.
