UPS just delivered a new MIM player series tele. I love everything about it but I’ve just noticed cracks in the finish either side at the base of the neck pocket. Is this an automatic return? I’m thinking it has to be.

Gotta post a pic, but those finish cracks are common, still would be nice to not have them.

Chances are....if you exchange it, the next one will have them or will eventually develop them. Your call.....:(

    Sorry to hear that!

My #1 is a 2000 MIM Standard Tele. Yep, 19 years old next month- according to Fender in Scottsdale. No finish cracks at, or next to the neck pocket, just examined it, again.

I’d be sending it back. None of my Fender guitars have those cracks even though they are considered normal.

Similar thing happened to me. No cracks when I bought my strat, but I put it in a hot car and voila, the cracks were there when I got home! The temp change, before the ac kicked in, probably did it. Finish cracks, no big deal, it’s a great guitar, I got over it. I could’ve maybe returned it, but I would have missed out on a really great player.

As well you should. That's not like getting the same crack in laquer. Eventually it will fall off in chunks.

I'd send it back or at least start there and tell the retailer you want a new "clean one". Then see if they'll offer a discount to keep it.

I wouldn’t accept it. Would you accept a new car with a couple of dents?

I defer to others' greater experience here, but my only guitar with cracks like that is 30 years old and only came into my hands last month (and that's with 3 of my other 4 electrics coming to me by mail, 2 of those used).

Fed Ex, UPS and USPS are noted for slamming over-sized boxes on a regular basis.

My bet is it didn't leave the seller in that condition.

Return it. I have one out of 4 Fenders with that type of crack in one side (and not as bad as yours) and I noticed it maybe when it was 10 years old - certainly didn’t start out like that. Although it is not uncommon to develop a crack like this over time on a bolt on neck guitar, I would in no way say it is “normal” or “acceptable” for a new guitar to arrive in this condition.

Those are quite some cracks. I'd send it back, too.

I about sh*t a biscuit this week when I watched the FedEx guy toss my new Kirncaster down flat on the sidewalk in front of my house as he was getting it out.

If I bought a new guitar, I would expect it to look like a new guitar. It might be interesting to see what the dealer says before returning.

    OUCH!

Looks like that neck took a good hard smack, both up and down. I'd send it back, for sure!

14 Teles and 4 Strats and narry a crack on ANY of them.
