Just got wind of the new SJ models the Gibson Custom Shop offers... a Pre-War SJ-200 with rosewood back & sides, ebony fretboard, headstock inlay and those fancy tuners - and a 1957 SJ 200 with maple back & sides, rosewood fretboard and the headstock stinger (and my preferred tuners) in both natural and vintage sunburst. And man, those darker sunbursts look WAY better than on the normal production models.

If I had some more money to blow I'd probably get both... a man can dream, right?

    Here's the Pre-War model:

    And here's the 1957 model:

Just beautiful. I recently bought a SJ200 and it’s the best sounding, coolest looking guitar there is. Sorry Tele guys.

    Beautiful!
I’ve owned a lot of guitars, but never a SJ200.
    Someday!

Both are stunning. I love my old Epi Texan but these are in a league of their own.

They are absolutely gorgeous instruments. I am not tempted solely because I have owned a 1960 J200 for a whole lot of years which is identical to a '57 other than the neck carve and tuners. But when it comes to assigning specific dates to various models, I swear it seems like Gibson writes a bunch of years on slips of paper and draws them out of hat.

I'd buy the '57 a drink and then take it home. If it was still there next morning though, I'd have to swap the truss rod cover for a modern one with the much thinner white edging. I think this old style looks really naff.
A few years ago I was in the lucky position to be able to buy a quality acoustic. I spent a couple of hours in a shop swapping between a Hummingbird, a Dove and a J-200. Despite always having been a fan of the J-200 it was the Dove that came home with me, it was the one I kept going back to.

I've always thought the bridge on an SJ200 looks like a hipster mustache.

Some things you just can’t unsee.
That prewar rosewood model will haunt me.
