I'm not a LP guy, no matter how much I've tried. But... I found a LP Std that I love. While playing it I noticed the rear control cover is a tinted cover and you could see a printed circuit inside. What happened to pots? Is this the new standard?

It's all in the name of quicker manufacturing. I ended up replacing it all so I could put in some Wolfetone Dr Vintage pickups and Vitamin Q caps, but the PCB seemed clean. Sure did make it easy to gut it out!

Starting 2008-2009 Gibson started putting Circuity Boards in there. You can take them out a put better stuff in them.

LOL. Pay the Gibson Premium and then have to gut everything? Reminds me of my 2012 Toyota Mini Van. They use awful General Tires. You get 7500 miles Max from them. So I'm forced to put another $700 into a brand new Car. Its just wrong. Unless you dig it like the OP seems to. First LP that has worked for him and the only one with a circuit board.

I'm thinking of buying a new Gibson. My first in years. If the Burst buckers don't live up to my standards I'm not buying the guitar.

The pups sounded great. Don't know if it was the printed circuit that made it sound good or not, but the guitar felt right. That's the main thing to me. I don't think you'll be disappointed in anything but the price.

Pay the Gibson Premium

We live in interesting times. My friend and I were chatting the oher day because we both simulataneously realized, if you look at the out-the-door prices -- a lot of Gibsons nowadays are cheaper than Fenders. We've both been shopping guitars since the mid 70s, and this is the first time we've seen that happen!

What premium? They have many more American made models that cost under $999 than Fender does.

I have 5 Gibsons with PCBs and 5 that have soldered parts. They all sound great. I'm glad that 7 of them cost less than $950. The Les Paul 50's Tribute has orange caps. That's special. It was $999.

I think this falls in the "so what" catagory.

Then buy a used one.

Missed it, by "that" much.....

I have a new Gold Top from our good friends at Gibson that includes the PCB. It sounds fine and work is flawless, except......

....they wired the pickups out of phase. Go figure. It has been rectified.

I was rather under the impression that the automation was intended to improve quality and consistency.

For modders, the PCBs complicate the process. Other than that, though, they're fine.

I'm with John--I wouldn't sweat it one way or the other. If you like the sound, there ya go; if you want to change it back to pre-Cold-War tech, it's simple and not that expensive.

It kinda boggles my mind though that they can save a significant amount of time and money with PCBs, given that the original circuit is so simple. . . .

Tearing out the circuit board and replacing it with discrete pots, wires and caps won't make any difference. Any change you think you hear is in your head.
