inspired by preeb and his wonderful les paul thread, i decided i wanted to try a goldtop finish. but none of my designs really lent themselves to it, so i designed a new one specially.

but playing with it in photoshop i liked how it looked with a burst too. so im doing both.

    here's the mockups
    [IMG][IMG]

i was waiting for the top for the burst to come so got on with the goldtop first.

i cut out the logos and was all ready to inlay them into the headstocks (i did both necks at the same time) only to find my dremel had broken. great stuff.

so instead i got to carving. im leaving it rough like this until its all glued together, then i can finish it off. i need to glue the neck in before the top because of the irregular fretboard end.

and then today the top for the burst came! yay!

and yes. its one piece. and yummy hehe

i intended to get the burst body up to speed with the goldtop today, but 4 week old nephew got in the way of that. not literally obviously, he's not capable of that yet.

so heres where i got to instead. got the mahogany bandsawed and routed and thicknessed, the top thicknessed and the binding route done. and the recurve shelf half done.

also, my pot of gold came!! oooo

both are pretty much at the same point now. im going to have to get a new dremel, then i can do the headstock logos before i glue the necks in. the burst headstock will get bound i have decided now, while the goldtop wont. i got the fretboards and binding today so i can get on with them (until the point where i need to do the inlay. bugger.)

    so, heres the burst
    [IMG]

and both together. remember the carve is staying rough till its all glued together, then i can finish it off properly

and this is the ivoroid binding

Looks awesome. I'm already GASing for one. :)

Out of curiosity, how are you planning your electronics to work? What are the knobs going to refer to?

Love the P90 with the goldtop. It's like a nod to Gibson without adhering to their rules.

got the dremel today (my first one with dremel actually written on it hehe) and got the headstock logos and the body binding channel around the horn done. also cut out the 12th fret inlays, but wont inlay them until the boards radiused as the ivory is so thin.

its really hard to take pictures of the carve. it looks really square edged, but its all curvy i promise. the bit on the flat part that looks like a bit of torn out wood is just that. it will either be sanded out with sanding, or it can be filled if not as this ones the goldtop. its not as deep as it looks in the pics though

also, stupid me buggered up the fretboards. both of them!! so i got new ones which are just waiting for binding, then sanding, then fretting

both fretboards are done (not glued on in the pic, just pinned), and the goldtop has its pickup routes done. both have the back cavities and cover recesses with the inserts
