Wifey just gave me a nice, well used, loved and somehow worn down bass to record with. I’m surprised on the quality of this bass considering this is probably just a level higher than their entry level. Not to mention this has a solid Alder body and Rosewood fretboard. Rosewood isn't as dark as I would like it to be, but hey, this is entry level.. cant complain!

Straight, fat neck, surprisingly great fretwork that I think is as dead level as a factory guitar can be. I tried setting the action low and amazed that I can still go even lower without buzzing.

I dont even know if that crack on the back is down to the wood. LOL.. I got it soo cheap, I might as well just leave it be, since the neck is sooo awesome. love the feel.

Polished the frets and oiled the rosewood board, strung with 50-110’s in standard tuning (YES IT CAN TAKE THAT MUCH TENSION) and I’m ready to record some groovy low end thump lines!

Nice Bass. I have the RBX 374 (the active version of yours) which I got in a trade for cheap.
Nothing but good things to say about it, and spaceship silver is a cool colour :D
Looks like this one :

I pulled the frets on mine  I want to be Mick Karn.

That crack doesn't go through an edge. I don't think it's enough to be worried about. You might wick CA into it, just to fill it up. It's not really any kind of a big deal, unless you decide to make it one.
I like it! Play on!

i looked at it closely, and I tried poking it with a very thin razor blade. Doesn’t appear to go through the wood as the blade didn’t go inside the crack. Probably stress on the finish.

It's a thicker, more 'modern' tone I guess. The humbuckers aren't vintage-sounding, for sure but the active EQ goes a long way...
I was pleasantly surprised to see your post as these basses don't get a lot of mentions, but as you say they're well built, good sounding and comfy

I’m a fan of Yamaha guitars. Their entry level stuff always punch waaaaaay above their price point, thats why I always look for Yamaha for anything entry level. I havent played anything modern production high end guitars from them, but I have played a few of their high end vintage stuff and they’re all great.

I was really dead set on getting a super cheap, decent Yamaha just for recording purposes. I dont want anything new as I want real rosewood on the fretboard, and to get that, id have to ask my wife to spend more. LOL.

it was just a simple Father’s Day (in Oz) gift and I wanted to get what I need, so I looked and looked til I found one, and let me wife buy it. Hahaha.

and yes, this is actually so good, that the neck is almost dead straight, and I can lower the action to insane levels with minimal buzzing, and I havent done a fret level on it (I doubt I would though). set up was a breeze after getting that truss rod tighter to take that 110 string gauge tension.

My word, that's delightful.

A friend of mine buys and sells basses for a living. He has access to some extremely high end custom instruments, but his gigging bass is an 80's Yamaha.
He speaks very highly of the newer ones too and is adamant that the quality has always remained top notch.
Remarkably fine instruments.

Yeah, Yamaha has a reputation for quality at the lower prices. I may need to check one out sometime. I have a thing for fender guitar and basses but... I'm not really a kool aid drinker.... In theory. But for some reason I've only ever bought Fender / Squier guitars after I did my stint early on with Epiphone Les Pauls.

I kind of want to try a shorter scale over my P bass. I think it might be a bit more enjoyable to play but I'm not sure...

Nice score OP. Looks good. I personally dig a bit of character on a guitar. Especially when it's real use character and not relicd.
