so you are biasing at around 57% (if my spreadsheet is accurate!)

did you choose this by listening, or by previous experience?

I wish I could bias by ear, but it's just not an option here in this house. I usually just go for 65% or so.

Ain't that the truth. Love the layout and love that Vox Fawn tolex - almost looks like the covering Leo used on his "White High Fidelity" line of amps! Just beautiful

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried the Vintage 10. It has an upper-mid spike that I find literally painful. (And the ones I tried were completely broken in; they had done years of service in a 2x10 Mesa Blue Angel.)

I just set it to about 20-21mA for a starting point and liked how it sounded. I haven't looked for anything optimal yet. At this setting, the trem has lots of depth! Maybe I'll push it up to 24mA and see how that sounds.

A Copperhead came with yesterday's mail. I installed it this afternoon.

On first listen, it's supplying just what I was after: smoother highs and fuller lows and low-mids.

Overall the amp sounds louder, but less strident. Bingo!

And then I played through the Copperhead some more . . .

I'm happy about the fuller lows and low-mids, but I miss the crispness up top.

So now I have a used Legend 1058 on the way. I've tended not to like that speaker. But a post from 2008 (or around there) indicates that once upon a time I loved the 1058 in a 5F11.

FYI, with this speaker quest, I'm definitely aiming for a good live performance voice.

Great job, nice amp. And good luck with the search of your speaker, it can be a long and hard way!

Thanks. I'm all too familiar with speaker hunting!

The good news is that I subbed the Copperhead into my 2x10 Deluxe Reverb in place of the Celestion Greenback 10. So far, I like the result. The Copperhead seems to balance well with an Eminence/Allessandro GA10-SC64.

At this point, I may just be talking to myself . . .

But, since I now had a Greenback 10 on my shelf, I decided I ought to try it in the Vibrolux. And it's . . . not bad. It can get a little mushy, and it pushes the amp more in a classic rock direction than I would prefer. But there are good sounds to be had.

Tomorrow the Legend 1058 shows up. I'll have to try that one out and decide which speaker to have loaded for a gig on Friday night. I'll have my Deluxe Reverb along, too, just in case.

One more time (and maybe still talking to myself) . . .

Received and installed the used Legend 1058. Hmm. Not going in the direction I had in mind.

    So, back to the Greenback????

Ah, wait! How about the Eminence/Allessandro GA10-SC64 that's in my Vibrolux Reverb?

So I pull that speaker and try it in the 5F11. It's the best so far. Nice highs, not shrill. Decent lows and low-mids, not mushy.

Ok. That's the speaker for tonight's gig.

    Gig Report

    Last night it was:
    • Tele (standard-style)
    • Casino
    • Machine Head Pedals RAW
    • Greer Special Request
    • 5F11 replica with GA10-SC64 speaker
The rig sounded great all night. No loud cleans, but there were still useable cleans to be had. No thumping bottom, but the overall balance from lows to highs fit snugly in the mix (guitar, piano/organ/accordion, bass, drums, harp, voice). No shred-level gain, but enough for D-style flavors.

    And talk about portability!
    • 5E3-sized cabinet
    • total weight under 25 lbs

I love these reports. Isn't it interesting how amp-dependent speakers are? You are something of a master of 10" speakers--an aficionado. And yet you still have to hunt. That sounds about right. I'm glad you enjoy the Eminence 10" in there.

    Thanks, Prof.

I had been thinking that maybe I would have to bite the bullet and buy a Celestion Alnico Gold 10 to get the right balance of lows and highs. But now I don't think so. Hooray!

This morning I filled the GA10 hole in my Vibrolux Reverb with the V1030. It sounds really good in that amp (paired with a Greenback 10).

One last note. Had the amp out for a live performance this afternoon. Everything was miked. It sounded great.

About 12 years ago, all my amps were variants of the 5F11. Now I’m remembering why!

Here's a song from a gig last night. This is Tele into the Vibrolux. The amp is turned up about halfway. But I'm slamming the front end with an overdrive followed by a clean boost. FYI, my guitar solo starts at about 2:50.
