new appreciation for music you didn't like when you were young.

Most of the early '80s music. Now I hear the Fixx, and realize how great Reach the Beach was. The same for me applies to early '80s British metal. Now, if I'm going to listening to metal at all, it would be Iron Maiden. I also never liked AC/DC, but now I think they were the epitome of hard rock.

If I may...Disco and Rap(in particular) really annoys me. The young or old part of me. Just saying.

First, let me say that IMO, good music is good regardless of genre. But as a kid, I could not stomach a lot of music of the '40s and '50s, esp. Frank Sinatra. I get why he was popular, and even I will admit that his bands were awesome. I just didn't like him or his music... and I still don't.

BUT, I have recently discovered the music of Duke Ellington, and his album with John Coltrane (1962) has become my new favorite. Not a bad track on the entire album.

when I was real young we'd be playing footy/cricket with the neighbourhood kids in our back yard.... listening to the old fella next door playing Beethoven, etc on a good Rotel deck/amp or another bloke up the back house who played show tunes/jazz on a piano of an afternoon...

it was surreal really....

Dad was the family DJ for parties/dances with a real mixed record collection we could play....

I listened to all kinds of music as a kid.... and appreciated all of it,,;)

Hated the Grateful Dead as a kid, and now they are one of my favorites.

Country. Glad the Hellecasters and Brad Paisley turned me around. Then I developed a really fond appreciation for Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson. Then I discovered the Highwaymen and did a wow.

50s, 60s, and 70s country, although I always liked Waylon Jennings and Buck Owens. And I loved Hee Haw. And Jerry Reed. More like I didn't like having to watch whatever weird 60s country music TV shows my folks would watch on PBS in the 80s.

I think right now I am putting a lot of old music I did not care for up against what's on the radio now and realizing I'd much rather listen to hair metal then what's on the Nu-Rock station. Except Bon Jovi, Bon Jovi still sucks

As a kid I didn’t like any “old” music - which was anything that wasn’t currently on the air. I grew to love all of that stuff, from Sinatra to Big Joe Turner, jazz, blues, classical, you name it. There’s always been good music, we just appreciate things at different points in life.

Yes. Some disco, 70s rock, country, synth pop, 80s metal.

But not all of it. Also into some of the more obscure acts which I didn't get a chance to hear back then.

I was in a Top 40 / Disco band back then. If it was on the charts we played it, but I think we drew the line at doing this. At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

The instrumental (side B) wasn't *that* bad...

Coming with Bowie, Roxy Music, Lou Reed type music, then punk I disregarded much if the other music around, thankfully common sense came back and I know love all 70's music, in fact James gang, Matthews Southern comfort and climax blues band have been my last three album purchases........oh the folly if youth.

The reverse question is equally interesting to me too! I used to love a ton of industrial and goth music in the 80s that with a few exceptions is pretty embarrassing when I hear it now.

Yeah this is easier for me to identify with. For decades, I mostly listened to music mainly to hear the guitar solos. Now, they actually bore me quite quickly, unless they're really really well integrated into the song.

As the OP notes, my set all hated disco in the '70s. Now? Love it all. Such great production! Such great arrangements! Such tight playing!

Also, Brahms.
Yeah we really trashed disco back in the day but in hindsight, what you said ☝🏼👍🏼

When I was younger, I had zero interest in Cream.

Nothing about the combination of Eric, Jack, and Ginger appealed to me at all.
It just never did.

Just this past year though, I have been giving a listen to their music, with a fresh, objective ear, and I'm starting to enjoy it.

:)
