I just got hold of a very expensive 30 watt handwired valve amp made by one of the most revered american makers.

I haven't had the opportunity to get loud with it yet. But at lounge volume the tone is massively disappointing.

The cleans are way too lively and trebley I.e. no natural compression. The overdrive is is just nasty.

It has a master volume but I'm thinking do I need to attenuate?

,.... or just invest in a different amp,.....

Some tube amps need to get loud in order to sound right. It's the nature of the beast. Have you discussed your disappointment in the amp with the maker yet. He may have some suggestions for you.

Is the speaker new? If so, break it in.

It would be easier if you told us what amp is that, & what speaker it has.

You could compare notes with similar amp owners.

I would also suggest give the speaker time to brake in. I had an amp built for me at first it was disapopinting but after a lot of hours the sound was there. I also took it back after a couple years and had the builder do some mods. I my case the builder is local so i'm at his shop in 20 minutes.

If it was that much money, you have to ask youself if this is what you really want.
IF it isn't, get with the Manufacturer.

Did you buy it without playing it first?

Mm,. Thanks for the replies. Amp is a new spec 2014 bad cat hot hot cat 30r. Sometimes it's hard to explain what is right or wrong about your tone.

I do suspect it's the low volume thing though, as the amp is massively loud for 30w. I currently have it on half power with the master on about 1. ....

...... do you attenuate a master volume amp.....?

Personally I have never played an eL 84 amp that sounded good at low volumes to me. They especially like to be cranked.

I've got three that sound good at low volume (Mesa TA-15, Mini Rectifier, and DC-3). They sound better when you beat on 'em, and require different tone control settings at lower volumes, but they do sound good when throttled back.

I would break that speaker in before making any other assessments.

That would be disappointing. You have to get through it and figure out how to get it right. Do the tubes need to be burned in?.........does the speaker need to be broken in?.......there has got to be a reason. I wish you the best.

    Try this:

Master at max, volume around 3/4, adjust volume down on your guitar.
I bet it will sounds very good that way... probably a lot warmer.

    Phil.

Per the thread title, I heard a tuba do that once.

I like this suggestion. Have you ever played a Bad Cat? I play a Cub II Reverb and love it, but I would say that Bad Cats are unique in their tone and in the way that the controls work (especially the tone controls). We also have a Classic Cat at church that sounds amazing as well, but I would say that both of these amps sound their best at higher volumes.

On mine, you want to start with the tone controls at the noon position and adjust from there, but you have to keep in mind that each tone control affects the way that the other tone control works, which makes it harder to dial in a tone, but also enables a wider variety of tones—if that makes sense. There was definitely a learning curve with mine, it took some time for me to tame it, so I guess you can say that Bad Cats live up to their name in that respect!

Good luck, and don't give up on it yet.

Is this head or combo? If it's combo assume it's Badcat special speaker and probably needs a good breaking in.

If head, what cab/speakers are you running it with?

Get a tonestack type pedal with bass, mid, treble.
Set the amp tone controls at max.
Use the tonestack to boost or cut to taste.

EL34s can sound fat and sweet in a cathode biased amp
and big and punchy in a fixed biased amp.

Good luck and get Etymotic ear plugs,
    DanD
