Columbus sailed in hopes of material wealth. The science came later.

Skip the planets, go for the stars. I like the idea, I have to still work out my age
after the trip. any space trip for that matter. I have never been good at the
    quantum thing.

Just don't turn off your voice command interface when testing your new fusion drive.

Very few. On the other hand space exploration has yielded many advances in science which have created products that we take for granted.
I think a Moon or Mars colony would be a costly fools errand but what if it creates technology that helps save the earth or improves the life of humans?

I don't think so. I think he and the other explorers, researchers, and the curious are driven by a compulsion the rest of us don't understand, but are dependent on for survival. Thinking guys like Columbus are only driven by wealth, is evidence of folks that don't understand how we got to where we are today. Space exploration only matters to the former, but benefits the latter.

In the old days , new ideas would come from Darpa. I think the internet came from there too.

In the old days, ideas were cheap, "I know, lets go to the moon?". It takes uncompromising effort talent and curiosity to make it real. I can think of a half dozen initiatives right now, diverting funds, resources, and press copy, that are all glorified version of, "ideas". In the olden days, you didn't get wealthy or fund a whole industry with just a good idea. Unlike today..

I think it's the moons that they are interested in. I believe there are many who believe some of the moons of Jupiter and Neptune could be habitable. Or have valuable minerals.

Before we venture into deep space travel I think it would be a good idea to successfully operate a Biosphere here on Earth.

I did a speech once for speech class on NASA. One fact I remember is that, in 1982 at least, more $$ were spent in the USA on frozen pizza than NASA's annual budget.
