Haven't been really worried about the snow on the roof of the Avion this winter. I cleaned a couple of feet of the crap off the old house so it doesn't fall in before I tear it down. My water comes from the house, washer a dryer is in there, plus storage.
The camper I was thinking about doing this weekend. There's enough heat loss through the roof to melt it and I thought maybe that melted snow could cause an issue. . . .
This morning I went to open the door and couldn't, freaking ice on the step. Didn't want to force it and bend the door. OK there's an emergency exit window, I'll just crawl out through that and chip ice. Well that didn't work, more damned ice! But I could get under that with a screwdriver and chip it. Then jump into about two feet of snow and made my way round front and chipped that ice.
Yeah 20191231_124518.jpg I'll be cleaning the roof today!

Would Heat Tape work? Do you have power out to that camper?

Here's my advice, from an RV owner in Michigan: Leave it alone. You're likely to cause more problems than you'll solve. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

Couple more days and you'll have yourself an igloo.
Igloos are meant to be warm inside aren't they?

    Hey!

DJ Chris supposedly lived in an Airstream in Cicely, Alaska (Northern Exposure).

I lived in a travel trailer from December through March in the Endless Mountains of Northern PA, just a few years ago.

Even used an outhouse for the whole duration.

It was cold but a unique experience.

And, I looked at it as a challenge.

In fact, it was really beautiful with the mountains, frozen streams and snow!

I would go bat-**** crazy if I was snowed in for months in a little metal tube and couldn't get out.

Do what you gota do to survive, and have an escape route.

Hell I'd go crazy just living in that area, even if I had a well insulated house that someone else maintained.

    Good luck, be safe!

Looking pretty buried up there man! I used to have to remove snow from the fiberglass top of my VW camper when it got too deep. I wasn’t living in it, but didn’t want to see it crater sitting in the driveway.

I’m sure you’re all over it, but a ladder and a big shop broom works pretty well. Sometimes I’d turn my driveway snow shovel upside down and carefully push it off the other side. Good luck!

The whole thing would probably go up in smoke in twenty seconds in your neighborhood.

We have another 40c day coming up next week. I could make a small fortune off that mobile igloo.

I used a shop broom to clear the loose snow off and saw the issue. No matter how much insulation you put in a roof there's always some heat that melts the snow right on the roof's surface. That's why houses have a space between the roof and insulation that's vented.
An Avion is spray foamed and probably still is one of the best insulated campers ever built. But the walls are only somewhere under two inches thick. So that melting, especially with all the snow up top was pretty bad. The resulting water froze on the sides known as an "ice damm".
From now on I'll be sweeping the roof clean after every snow fall!

You can't see the ice around the edges in this shot but the snow melt is pretty obvious. If it hadn't melted it be well over two feet deep now! It was a good foot thick out on the edges.
Supposed to be pretty warm for awhile with highs in the upper 20s. Maybe with some sunshine it'll loosen the bond between the aluminum and I can carefully get most of it off. 20200123_165553.jpg
