I'm currently unhappy with my amp. I've only owned it for about 8 months, but I didn't really gel with it. I've been trying to look online for a replacement, but I feel lost in a sea of amps. Hopefully, you guys can help me narrow in on a few amps. Here's some info to help you.

    • Current amp is an EVH 5150 III 50 watt head. Great for humbuckers, but Tele's with single coils sound like crap on distortion channels. Also, a bit too high gain for the majority of what I play. Is nice to play metal every now and then, but not necessary.
    • Need an amp that will sound good with single coils and humbuckers on both clean and dirty channels.
    • Must be 50 watts. No more, no less.
    • Style of musical ground it should cover - AC/DC, Van Halen, Guns N' Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine.
    • Have an effects loop.
    • 2 Channels, clean and dirty, footswitchable.
I'm disabled so it makes it hard to get out and try amps. Plus, with the added virus going around, it's even more difficult. Hopefully, you guys can help me out. I'm having a hard time finding the right amp for me by doing Google searches.

    Thanks in advance!

With the exception of STP and later EVH, those are all Marshall tones.

EDIT: Also, you didn’t specify cab or speakers you are playing through.

Sadly, Marshall no longer makes a 50 watt DSL head. But the 100watt head has power scaling. OTOH, I’m of the thinking to avoid 100watts as it costs more for retubing. That’s just me. In any case, there is not a lot of volume difference between 50 and 100watts.

Older 50 watt DSL? If you want new there are other options. Fender bassbreaker is Marshall-y. Supersonic less so, but is high gain. Blackstar and Jet City could work. I’m not sure if they all have 50 watt options, but a google search can confirm. All have two channel options.

There are also tons of Marshall clone makers with Plexi and JCM800 variants with 50 watt and two channel options (I assume), like Friedman, Metroupolis, Ceriatone, Germino, just to name a few.

Playing through a custom Zilla 1x12 cab that's oversized to the point of almost the size of a 2x12. Celestion Vintage 30 is in it at 8 ohms.

Marshall or Blackstar, unless you have a lot of cash for a Mesa.

My daughter has a Blackstar. I was under the impression that they were budget grade amps.

The highest I could do is probably $2,000 new or used.

Look for a Mesa 25 watt anything. They're power switchable and very tweakable with good eqs and nice fat transformers. I had a Mini Rectifier clone. Great amp

I'd recommend the Victory Sheriff series. 45w head, Marshall style, fantastic build quality, power attenuation (30/6w), what's not to like? :)
    P.S. Did I mention it's handbuilt?

maybe you've been there already but there are tons of pedals that make a clean channel sing. for fat cleans, I like the Klon clones a lot... Archer, Tumnus etc. and a bit different circuit that does a lot of things from Dumble to ??, The Dude... wow.

Ignore the upper 10 Watts, or just use the VariWatt control to knock them down a little. What's a few extra Watts anyway.

Pristine cleans through all manner of crunch up to and including all manner of modern detuned riffery. Independent EQ, FX loop, reverb.

Lots of options: Marshall, Mesa, Soldano, Orange, even that new VHT Dumble clone might be good.

Heavy distortion is often not that good with single coils, except on a few amps. The best you can do is listen to youtube demos. Still won't be perfect because the cab is 50% of the sound in my opinion, plus they play differently than you, but it's the best in this situation.

Try the Marshall SV20 plexi. Yeh I know its only 20w but it's only a couple of db difference through the same cab. Plus in reality they are prob. closer to 30w. line out & FX loop.

That sounded great, now I'm wanting one. Great guitarist doing the demo too.

I've already been down the pedal route about 15 years ago with a Carr Rambler 2x10 combo. Amazing amp, but didn't fit my playing style. I got it for a certain gig that played that kind of music. I'm an amp distortion guy.

    I think a 100 watt Marshall may work ...

Order online from a company with a good return policy ...

    30 days should be adequate...

    45 is great ...
