Got this Wolfgang Special yesterday. It's considered vintage white, but it's basically yellow. I'm thinking of using vinyl stripes so I can remove them if I want to. What color would you suggest? Black is the first that comes to mind, but I was thinking of accenting with a dark red/burgundy? Any suggestions would be great.

I like the way it looks now, but since you can remove or change them, how about silver? or white?

I had actually thought about white as well, maybe accent with some dark navy blue?

I would leave it as is, or mod it to make it look like "yours" instead of someone else's, but I can see the appeal of modding it to look like your hero's axe. I get it, and EVH is an awesome guitarist.

One word of advice from someone who has put stickers/decals on his guitar, keep in mind that depending on the paint it may change colour at a different rate than the parts that are covered up by the vinyl stripes and not exposed to light and the elements. Even if you remove the vinyl, you may still end up with stripes of light and slightly darker yellow if you leave the vinyl stripes on for a while.

As for colour, I think white and black would look good against that yellow, maybe red for a splash.

Good luck and enjoy your new guitar!

Looks great.. It is so rounded, it might be symetrically off with straight lines?
Maybe a fat nonstick decal. bomber gal, wolf, tribal sign?

Good ideas folks! This is what I did before to a past axe. Thinking similar. I definitely get the aging difference. [IMG]

I want to second this bit of advice! I have a 1982 G&L SC-1 that's a pretty rare guitar, and it's all original. However, an earlier owner did the Van Halen tape stripes to it, and yep, the paint is darker where the stripes were, even though they've been gone for years. It's not really noticeable from a distance, but up close it's there, and I suspect it'll cost me some money when I sell it!

I wouldn't put anything on a light-colored guitar that I ever planned on taking off. If you put anything on a light guitar for any period of time, it will discolor at a different rate. That is too nice of a guitar to ruin. I wouldn't Franken- anything other than an already beat up body. It doesn't look right, and just looks cheesy when made to be "nice".

I'm starting to think these suggestions for not striping it are gonna resonate with me. Definitely don't want to ruin it.

You could put a 3M ScotchPrint on the entire face of the guitar. It is a digitally printed vinyl used in vehicle wraps. Since it would cover the entire face it would not fade in sections. The adhesive is also formulated to be non destructive and easy to remove (at least off of auto finishes).

Thanks! I'm really enjoying it. It's an 80's rock n roll machine.

You have to watch out for the copyright police when you do that. You can't sell it on eBay anyway.

Take a look at this thread about the copyright violation.

Got a silly EVH Copyright Question

P.S.---I bought a "Vintage White" Strat from MF---they should have called it "Banana Pudding"..because that is what it looked like...I got used to it....

I'd just play her as is. It's a nice guitar, without the stripes, IMO.

Not that one. Buy another beat up one if you want to do that vinyl job. That bad boy looks sweet the way it is!

No way man! That beast is dead sexy without any "enhancements".

Get a cheap strat body if you want to stripe something up!

The legal advice in that EVH copyright thread is cringe-inducing

Oh and keep the guitar plain.

No stripes it is. The yellow hue has grown on me. It's basically a banana pudding yellow. I dig it more and more. It's at my luthier to remove the d-tuna (never used it on previous guitars, and I don't play in dropped-anything) and set it up for 10's. Ready for it to come back!
