I had one of these. It’s definitely not a DS1. Not nearly enough gain, and very warm. More like a TS style overdrive for sure, but with a little more gain and headroom on tap, IIRC.

The “Prime Distortion” was the sister pedal, and had that chainsaw DS1 sound a much more gain. There was also a “Classic Overdrive” in the series (all of these were GC exclusive, with “tribal” graphics) that was very vintage OD low gain style.

Since we're on MXR, with the Il Diavolo I think you can switch between asymmetrical and symmetrical with a mini-toggle.

If you can solder or know someone who can, BYOC has a kit for a mini called the “Lil’ Modified Overdrive”, they describe it as a TS style with asym clipping (so basically, an SD-1). They even have a link on their site to a guy who makes pre-built stuff for not much more than the kit. Unfortunately, since COVID they’ve been out of stock on nearly everything on their website, but I believe they have the schematics up for free somewhere.

Valeton makes a decent copy of the OD-1, precursor to the SD-1 minus the tone circuit. I’ve also owned the aforementioned Mooer Flex Boost and it can get in the ballpark.

Also, if you can abide the MXR size, I’ll throw in a +1 for the Custom Badass Modified OD. Despite the absurd name, it is truly a great pedal.

So this is happening. I got to say, the Donner Blues Drive gives the SD-1 a run for the money. The Timmy is much harder to get close to that sound.

I have that Spark mini. Great boost.

Thanks for doing this. Question: how does that TU3S mute for silent tuning?

I have a Donner Blues Drive, and, although they call it a TS type, it sounds nothing like a TS or an SD1 to me. It sounds morel like a BD2, brighter and fuzzier when you crank up the gain.

Well I definitely do not want a BD2 sound. I hate those things! Lol!

Apparently the MXR GT-OD is just a renamed Classic Overdrive, and both of them and the Zakk Wylde are all the same board, and have the secret switch that gives you a mid-hump or a flatter frequency response. DSC00505.jpg

The Blues Drive sounds nothing like a BD-2. I have one of those too. Maybe I should just record some clips.

The Blues Drive is cheap enough, it's worth a try.

@Jakedog oh, and there's no mute on the TU-3S. I just kick my Ernie Ball Jr. down.

    I see “1 left”. Maybe someone’s cart timed-out?

I see one available from “Earth City Sound Co” for $49.99. Someone is trying to do you a solid by sending a link to an in-stock item.

MXR Mini Timmy ... you can select asymmetric clipping and tweak the knobs for a very like SD-1 sound.
