Which neck pickup do you prefer? What do you like about the neck pickup in teles and strats?
Depends what I want to do.
Whatever sound I want at the time will determine which guitar I pick up.
I have both and like the tele. Why ? I just like the sound. Sorry I'm not an engineer to go into more detail. I'm also traditional in that a tele should have covered pickup
Which tele? Which strat?
Like this thread. But we're talking apples and oranges. Sometimes I want one more than the other. But they both taste great. Keep on pickin!!!
Love the tight, woody sound of a Strat neck pickup. I also really enjoy the G&L asat Z-3 neck pickup.
Please forgive me, but I'm going to be a heretic. I love telecasters, but this isn't even a close one in my mind. Strat all the way.
I have to give credit where credit is due. The tele neck pickup is too dark. Dull. And a poor match for the brilliant snap and twang of the bridge. The strat doesn't have this problem. Strat neck pickup is shimmery and clear and full and authoratative and bright all at the same time. It's a masterpiece of electric guitar design. Kind of like the bridge PU on a tele.
Can solve the problem by changing the neck pickup to a different design. P90s, strat pickups, mini-humbuckers...I think lots of neck PUs sound great on a telecaster. Just not the stock one.
Neck (and 2-4/in between positions) on a strat, bridge (and middle) on a tele.
Can't vote since there isn't an option for "I like em all".
Esquire for me.
Have both, lovw the strat. Like my tele, just like the strat more.
Although it's been said, many times, many ways, but there are different varieties of Fender Tele neck pickups as well as the wiring for them. My 52RI for instance is anything but dark; it's got brilliance, sweetness, range, and proper amount of Fendery "clunk". OTOH I once bought a Seymour Duncan "Vintage Tele" neck and it was dark and/or muddy but it was apparently true to the originals. So back it went. If that was my only experience with a Tele neck p'up I'd hate 'em too. It's the Fender equivalent of the '52 Les Paul upside-down bar bridge - not representative of the breed as it became.
Strat neck pickup in almost all my Teles. The only exception is my icon here, my jazzer with a Lollar Royal T, strung with flatwounds. My living room guitar, picked out by my wife who hates string squeak and loves red guitars. She also picked the scratch guard, neck, armrest, bridge, knobs, and switch tip for the unwired switch.
My favorite Tele neck pickups are those that sound a lot like a Strat, but are a little sweeter and more delicate sounding, without losing the Stratty overall tonal balance and dynamics.
What ga. strings?
I use the neck pickup on my two Strats 95% of the time and the neck pickup on my Telecaster about 75%.
I love both neck pickups so hard to choose.
I like the neck pickup in my ‘08 American Standard Tele. Nothing wrong with it. Sorry about yours.
On my Am Strat the neck pickup (CS Fat ‘50s) sounds good, too. Just different.
Doesn’t matter. I still sound like me.
I wasn’t a big Tele neck pickup fan until I got some Cavalier pickups. The “Fat Lion King” is one of the best neck pickups I’ve ever heard and I very much like my strat.
As Big_Bend said, "I like 'em all" in the neck position.
And in that mix, I include Firebird, Mini Humbucker, Hilo'tron, Filter'tron, T-Armond (Dynasonic), and Dimarzio PAF Master pickups in the neck position. They're all great!
