The neck IS the guitar and all the rest is just beads, baubles, cherries, sprinkles, bells and whistles to support, complement and enhance what that neck (and the hand that abuses it) does!

I have to say I find this a weird question.

The neck is the thing you play. It needs to at least work properly, re frets etc.

The body is a lump of wood. As long as it doesn't jab me or weigh too much, who cares?

I'm with Gene, the neck is the guitar. The body is just for holding all the other bits in place.

No matter how pretty a guitar looks or sounds, if the neck isn't comfortable you'll be reaching for the guitar with a neck that is...unless you have only one guitar :(.

Find or make the comfiest neck and then pick and swap the body, hardware, pickups until you find parts worthy.

Your connection with the instrument is via the neck. For me the body holds the bridge and p/u’s in place and gives you something to hold onto.
You could hack huge lumps out of a Tele body and it will still do the job.

I guess everyone here don't mind playing explorer, V, and other PITA BC Rich shape.

Personnaly that's both, that's why I love strat over any guitar, belly cut, arm comfort etc is important.

    Yes.

This to me is like asking, "what's more important, the engine or transmission?" Doesn't matter, I'm not getting anywhere without both.

The neck seems to be more influential.

Interesting question on a forum which celebrates a guitar with a unique headstock and body and anything but unique neck. :)

I trade/buy off Craigslist and I rarely get a good feel for a guitar before I get it. I’ve bought online as well. I’ve taken chances and been rewarded with some killer budget($400-$100) axes. I rarely know the specs before I take them home. I’m basically an adult Short-Round so body size plays in to some extent. I bought a V once and found out that “extreme” body shapes don’t work for me. Too long! I’d bounce it off the furniture or a cat every time I’d play it. So yeah I have my dream neck and body plays in a bit but I’ll usually just play the crap out of it and try to adapt to the changes. Small bodies do tend to favor me. The only body that really made me do a double take was that St Vincent I just got. I reach up to the hanger and grab it by the forearm cut. I knew something was special about it as soon as I grabbed that sucker! It’s so thin! So comfortable! The neck is great but this one I bought for the body...and 3 MHbs!

Check out a St Vincent. Feels like a strat but sleeker which is an odd thing to say. It sure don’t look like it but it’s strat comfy!

    The neck.
I cannot use small, short scale (under 24 3/4 inch), narrow nut width (under 1 11/16 inch) necks.
I think the body is important, too, but less so than the neck.
The body matters less, but I still have to like the look of it.
I’m “Shallow Hal” in that regard

Neck or body. What is more important to you!

Both are for me, de toute évidence !

I'll add that the combination of both is as important - and even more - as them taken separately.

    Yes.

The neck, but sometimes a great neck can't make up for a bizarre body.

Both have to be good enough. I'm not real particular, but negative grades disqualify. No 16" radius, no narrow nut, no points or corners that dig in.

A stiff stable neck, a light body and an air-tight neck joint seems to work for me. Everyone is different...

I look for the best bits, sometimes it’s the neck, sometimes the body, could be the boobs,

Seriously, the bit I play, the neck, is the starting pint, if it’s not comfortable, for whatever reason, it diminishes my playing pleasure. But, interestingly, I marginally prefer the neck on my Tele to that on my Strat. However, in lockdown, I’m playing at home and seated. I reach for my Stat. As discovered by Leo’s early guinea pigs, a Tele is not a comfortable instrument to have on your lap.
